The purpose of this study was to provide the educational recommendations guideanse to increase understanding of electric circuits and to improve the learning process which was done by examining the correlation between the circuit diagrams that students preper and their understanding of three circuit diagrams. The research subjects were 225 high school students. Results are summarized as follows: First, students preferred that the battery be located at the bottom of the eletrical circuit diagram, that the direction of the current be clockwise, ant the resistances symmetrically located with respect to the battary. Second, studendts showed high achievement when studying with a circuit diagram they preferred. As for female students, the percentage of correct answers of ‘perference’ circuit diagram questions was high, but they answered less correctly than male stduendts in the case of ‘transformation’ circuit diagram questions. Consequently, general patterns of circuits that students prefer exist, and these kinds of circuits tend to be understood easily.
Therefore, learning of electric circuit diagrams should proceed from the level of an electrical circuit that students prefer to a deeper level.
