It also recorded the highest year-on-year increase in the number of these according to the SCI Thesis Presentation Status Report of 2006 released by the ministry.

�As the Seoul-Chuncheon Expressway was opened to traffic in July 2009 and Chuncheon is now only a 30-minute drive away from Seoul, KNU is newly emerging as a metropolitan university. Its distinctiveness as a national university and new geographical advantage combined, matriculation of talents in the metropolitan area is steeply rising each year, making a turnaround for its qualitative and quantitative growth and development.

Information for Foreign Students
�Combined master and doctoral course
The combined course is available at departments running both master and doctoral programs. A doctoral degree is granted to those who finish the course.
� Requirements for applicants
1. Non-Korean nationals whose parents are non-Korean nationals
2. Non-Korean nationals who finished the education courses abroad which correspond to the South Korean primary, secondary and tertiary education courses
� Qualifications for applicants 1. Undergraduate course
Those who satisfy at least one of the following 2 requirements among those who finished the education courses corresponding the 12 year-long primary and secondary education courses in South Korea or those whose academic career is deemed equivalent to the criterion mentioned before
a. Those who acquired Grade 4 or higher at the KLPT (Korean Language Proficiency Test) or at the TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean)
b. Those who finished the 1-year or longer Korean language training program at the language institute of Kangwon National University or another South Korean university / college as of the admission deadline - the former required to finish the program before the date of admission
2. Master’s course
Korean or English speaker among those with a bachelor’s degree (graduates-to-be included) or those who are legally deemed to have an equivalent or higher academic career
3. Doctor’s course
Korean or English speaker among those with a master’s degree (graduates-to-be included) or those who are legally deemed to have an equivalent or higher academic career
4. Combined course (master and doctoral)
a. Korean or English speaker among those with a bachelor’s degree (graduates-to-be included) or those who are legally deemed to have an equivalent or higher academic career
b. Those whose undergraduate GPA is 90 or higher on a scale of 100 points
� Screening process [common to undergraduate and graduate applicants]
1. Step 1: Paper screening
a. Classification into ‘acceptable’and ‘unacceptable’applicants based on documentation b. Additional paper screening and interview for acceptable applicants
2. Step 2: Paper screening and interview
a. Assessment of academic plan (applicant’s study plan - 30 points)
b. Assessment of scholastic aptitude (applicant’s academic record - 30 points) c. Assessment of language proficiency (phone or face-to-face interview - 40 points)
� Further information
1. Those who are granted admission have to pay the tuition within the designated period. If not, admission is cancelled.
2. In case of accident or disease, those who are granted admission have to subscribe to an accident insurance that is effective from the date of entrance and lasts during the period of enrollment.
3. An admission certificate is sent to those who paid the tuition. To those who dwell in China, an admission certificate is sent after the allocation of a visa certification number by the Immigration Office of the Ministry of Justice.
4. In case an applicant who paid the tuition gives up on admission for an unavoidable engagement, the tuition paid is refunded by the procedure stipulated by the school regulations.

Information for Foreign Students�Undergraduate students
- Tuition support to freshmen with better academic records (1stsemester) a. 700,000 won per student (1stsemester)
b. Criterion: 18 students whose TOPIK records are higher among those who submitted their TOPIK records and 2 students who finished a Korean language program at the LTI(Language Training Institute) of Kangwon National University with better records
�Graduate students
- 50% of the school association fee given until graduation to graduate students with a certain level of academic records
� Dormitory
Priority over Korean students given in allocation to those who apply for a dormitory room
4. Korean language program
In Korea, the center of globalization, the world is in your sight.
KNU accompanies you on the fast track to Korea.
� Applicants: any non-Korean speaker who wants a systematic education of the Korean language - especially recommendable to those who plan to enter a Korean university / college or graduate school
� Qualification for applicants:high school graduates or those whose academic career is deemed equivalent to or higher than that of a high school graduate
� Course: The student can study the Korean language at the LTI(Language Training Institute). The course is individually tailored learning of the Korean language available based on each of the student’s placement test result during each spring, summer, fall and winter semesters
� Program features
1) Culture class every semester
2) Access to facilities of Kangwon National University (dormitory and library opened to first-time enrollees of a spring semester)
3) Certificate issued each semester to those who win Grade 4 or higher and scholarship for those with higher records scheduled
4) Introduction of Korean friends
5) Agreeable class environment with each class limited to 15 students or less 6) Opening of Korean speaking contests (foreign students only)

Level 1 - Practice of basic Korean vocabulary, everyday conversation including self-introduction and greetings, understanding of basic Korean culture like food culture and manners
Level 2 - Korean phonological and grammatical rules, practice of idiomatic expressions for personal and public occasions
Level 3 - Sentence making and speaking, learning and practice of high-level grammar, speaking and sentencing of one’s idea and claim
Level 4 - Practice of idiomatic expressions in everyday situations and special occasions, practice of situation-specific expressions at school and work, learning of occasion-specific terms
Level 5 - Enhancement of speaking and writing ability through political, economic, social and cultural debates, writing of lecture notes and reports, in-depth study of Korean culture
