Jailed Samsung heir appeals against conviction
Lawyers for the jailed heir to the Samsung empire filed an appeal against his conviction on Monday as South Korean media divided on the ruling that put the country’s top business leader behind bars. Lee Jae-Yong, the de-facto head of Samsung Electronics, was found guilty last week of bribing South Korea’s ousted president Park Geun-Hye and sentenced to five years in prison.

Philippines hosts ASEAN-China seminar on South China Sea
Senior diplomats, policymakers and maritime cooperation scholars from members states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and China will meet in Manila to exchange views on the South China Sea. The seminar on the full and effective implementation of the 2002 Declaration of Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) will be held on August 28 and 29. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced that the meeting in Manila this week seeks to enhance practical cooperation between the regional bloc and China in the disputed waters.

10 terror suspects killed in Lake Lanao battles
Government security forces on Monday killed 10 suspected Islamic State-inspired terrorists who were trying to sneak into the battle zone in Marawi City. Lt. Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr., commander of the military’s Western Mindanao Command, told reporters that soldiers were able to intercept pump boats carrying members of the Maute and Abu Sayyaf groups as the terrorists attempted to enter the main battle area through Lake Lanao.
He said a firefight erupted and lasted for three hours. Ten terrorists were killed, he said.

Duterte to Espenido: ‘Will Iloilo City mayor live?’
Chief Insp. Jovie Espenido, whose crack team has killed two mayors linked to illegal drugs, has a new assignment: to run after another alleged protector of drug syndicates: Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
President Rodrigo Duterte himself gave the assignment to Espenido, whom he awarded the Order of Lapu- Lapu for “extraordinary service” on Monday.
