Day 1

We were finally about to land at Nuuk Airport in a few minutes. I looked down and saw ocean, hills, and buildings with some snow on them here and there. It looked cold out, but after such a long flight I could not wait to get off the airplane. When I got out, I noticed other passengers clapping their hands as they got off. Mom and I followed what they did without knowing why. Dad later told me that it is an old tradition

celebrating a safe arrival. Interesting! The air was certainly cold but refreshing.

While having dinner, the Nielsens told us about some Greenlandic traditions. When I said I wanted to learn more, they suggested that we go to the National Museum of Greenland together.

Mr. Nielsen and Joas took my family to the National Museum of Greenland. On our way to the museum, I noticed a red building that looked like a mailbox. Actually, it was a real mailbox! "It is the world's biggest mailbox. It was designed to protect the mail from strong snowy winds," explained Joas. When I got close to it and looked up, I felt as if I were in Giant Land in Gulliver's Travels. At the museum, we could see traditional costumes, tools, and handicrafts made by the Inuit, who are the native Greenlanders. They used animal skins to make warm clothes and even boats. Using animal bones and horns, they made weapons and tools such as knives and needles, and even carved works of art. I could sense their wisdom and strong determination to overcome the harsh

environment.

After breakfast, my family headed to Ilulissat with Mr. Nielsen. He explained that the word

"ilulissat" means "icebergs" in Greenlandic. I could see many tourists who were there to see the icebergs. The first thing that caught my eye was a road sign with a picture of a sled on it. I asked Mr. Nielsen what it was for.

He said, "It warns people about the dog sleds passing through this area." I wanted to see a dog sled, but it was not snowy enough for them yet. We took a boat from the town harbor to see the icebergs better. What we saw as we approached them left us

speechless. Enormous icebergs of different shapes were floating in the sea. Some of them were as big as mountains. Mr. Nielsen said, "The icebergs are melting and slowly changing into new shapes every day. In fact, they are melting faster than ever." That means we can never see the icebergs in the same shape twice. Dad kept taking pictures, and I tried my best to record the images of the beautiful icebergs in my mind.

셋째 날

Leaving Ilulissat behind, we went to Kangerlussuaq, the final destination of our journey. It is one of the best places in Greenland to see the Northern Lights. Mr.

Nielsen insisted that we get settled early, saying the Northern Lights might appear any time after dark. So, we set up on a hill and had dinner while waiting calmly for the lights.

Hours passed without any sign of them in the sky. I began to doubt that we could see the lights. At that moment, Mom shouted, "Look up there!" Some lights began to appear in the sky! At first, they looked like candle flames waving in the wind. Then, they gradually turned into curtains of green lights that kept changing color and shape. It looked as if the lights were slowly dancing to the music of nature. Their beauty was far beyond what I had imagined from the photos Dad had shown me. It was the best night of my life.

넷째 날

This morning, Mr. Nielsen kindly saw us off at the airport. As the plane took off, I looked down at Greenland once again. The landscape looked the same, but this time I had quite a different feeling. Greenland may not be as "green" as the name suggests.

However, it showed me the beauty of its grand nature. I was also able to learn about the strong spirit of the native people living here. It will always remain in my memory as a dynamic and colorful place to visit.
