Correlation Analysis Between the Ability of Middle School Students to Estimate Physical Quantities and Their Ability to Think Logically

In this study, we analyzed the correlation between ability of middle school students to estimate physical quantities and their ability to think logically. The estimate-ability questionnaire consisted of 24 items about the physical quantities such as length, mass, volume, and speed. Each quantity was assessed by using four basic estimate problems and two Fermi problems. For the investigation of logical-thinking ability, a reduced GALT version was used. Eighty-four ninth graders in the Seoul area participated in this survey. From the result, we found that students got the highest score when estimating the length, followed in order by mass, speed, and volume. The scores

on the Fermi problems were lower than those on the basic estimate problems. In solving basic estimate problems, students with formal thought ability did significantly better than those with lower cognitive development stages. In conclusion, there was a positive correlation between basic estimating ability and logical thinking, especially control of variables in reasoning. We discussed the educational implications of the results.
