The compound-specific carbon isotopic analysis technique for MTBE (methyl tert -butyl ether) and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and o-xylene) by GC-IRMS (Gas chromatography- isotope ratio mass spectrometry) has been used as an important tool for monitoring and tracing the sources of oil contamination. In this study, we preliminarily investigated the δ

13

C values of MTBE and BTEX in 40 gasoline samples which were collected from four different manufacturers in South Korea: S-Oil, SK, GS and Hyundai. The δ

13

C values of these compounds ranged from -27.8 to -25.2 ‰ for MTBE, from -27.5 to -26.4 ‰ for toluene, from -26.4 to -24.1‰ for ethylbenzene, and from -29.2 to -26.5‰ for o-xylene, respectively.

C values of toluene and ethylbenzene were very similar among manufacturers, whereas δ

13

C values of MTBE and o-xylene of gasoline produced by S-Oil were clearly distinguished from those of other manufacturers. Combination of carbon and hydrogen isotope data for these compounds will be helpful to better discriminate gasolines produced from different manufactures in Korea.
