In 2014, Germany maintained its position as the world’s third largest exporter (behind China, USA), and third largest importer (behind USA, China).

z

z

Germany’s share of world trade (exports and imports in USD) increased to 7.2% in 2014. China’s world trade shares were 11.3% (2013: 11.1%) and the shares of the USA were 10.7% (2013: 10.4%).

z

z

The export ratio (i.e. exports’ percentage share of GDP) increased slightly to 39.0% in 2014 and the import ratio fell to 31.6%. The “degree of openness”

(imports plus exports in relation to GDP) was 84.8%.

The growing share of foreign value added in German gross exports of up to 26 % in 2011 (1995: 15 %) high- lights Germany’s increased embeddedness in global value chains.

z

z

Trade surplus increased to €196.4 billion in 2014, i.e.

6.7% in relation to GDP (2013: 6.0%). However, the trade surplus contributed only 0.4 percentage points to GDP growth (GDP +1.6%).

z

z

In 2014, the current account, comprising the balances of cross-border trade in goods (trade balance), cross- border trade in services (services balance), cross-border payments arising from employment and assets (income balance) and current transfers featured a surplus of

€229 billion or 7.9% of GDP.

z

z

The European countries were Germany’s main trad- ing partners again, having received 68.0% of German exports and totalling 71.0% of German imports. Trade within the EU accounted for 58.0% of exports and for 58.2% of imports. The shares of trade with the euro area amounted to 36.6% of exports and 38.3% of imports.

z

z

The leading sales markets for German goods outside the EU were the USA (8.5%) and China (6.6%). In the first half of 2015, the USA (9.4%) overtook France (9.0%) as the biggest sales market for German exports (8.5%

and 9.0%, respectively in 2014). The leading suppliers from outside the EU were also China (8.8%) and the USA (5.4%).

z

z

The largest shares of exports represented vehicles and vehicle parts (18.1%), machinery (14.8%), chemi- cal products (9.6%) and computer/electronic equip- ment (7.9%). The main imported goods were com- puter/electronic equipment (9.9%), cars and car parts (9.6%) and petroleum and natural gas (8.4%).

z

z

Germany recorded a trade surplus in the trade of goods of €213.60 billion (up €18.65 billion from 2013).

A total of €121.33 billion (+€11.32 billion) was with

other EU countries, of which €63.20 billion (+€1.28

billion) came from the euro area. Exports to the EU

worth €648.45 billion (of which €413.75 billion went

(3)

to the euro area) contrasted with imports worth

€527.12 billion (euro area: €350.55 billion).

z

z

Only a bit more than half (56.8%) of the total Ger- man trade surplus is explained by the export surplus in relation to the other EU-28-countries. Nearly a third of the surplus (29.6%) can be attributed to the euro area.

z

z

Germany recorded the largest trade surplus in rela- tion to the USA (+€46.7 billion or 16.3%), the United Kingdom (+€40.6 billion or 14.2%), France (+€33.9 billion or 11.8%), Austria (+€19.6 billion or 6.8%) and the United Arab Emirates (+€10.6 billion or 3.7%).

Germany’s highest deficits in the trade of goods were with the Netherlands (-€15.1 billion or 5.2%), Norway (-€9.3 billion or 3.2%), Russia (-€9.1 billion or 3.2%), the People’s Republic of China (-€5.5 billion or 1.9%) and Vietnam (-€4.1 billion or 1.4%).

z

z

As in previous years, the German surplus on trade in goods was opposed by a deficit on trade in services of €33.7 billion (2013: €40.9 billion). According to World Bank data, Germany (USD 581.2 billion) was the second largest market for trade in services (exports plus imports), following the USA (USD 1,151.6 billion).

The share of services in the value added of gross export values of goods was 50.71% in 2011 (12.8 per- centage points thereof were added from abroad).

z

z

A quarter of total employment depends directly or indirectly on exports (1995: 16.6%).

z

z

One third of final domestic demand is covered by

imports (import dependency ratio of 34.1%). The

share of imported upstream goods was similarly

around one third (29.2%). The bulk of German

imports, though, stems from European neighbour

countries.
