OA2020 Transformation Workshop
Workshop description and objectives:
This workshop is a unique opportunity to learn about transformational OA strategies. Participants will gain a better understanding of the open access landscape and the economic factors which are at the foundation of the OA2020 Initiative and will learn new ways to gather and analyze data beyond COUNTER statistics that will inform their licensing and open access strategies. Learning from the experience of the Max Planck Digital Library and other organizations working to accelerate the transition to open access, participants will come away with greater perspective on how libraries can drive
transformation of the subscription system and the practical knowledge to map out their next steps on the road to open access.
Docents:
Dr. Ralf Schimmer, Deputy Librarian and Head of Information
Max Planck Digital Library – Munich, Germany
Ralf Schimmer leads the licensing strategy of the Max Planck Digital Library, serving the Society’s 80+ advanced research institutes. A champion of open access in scholarly communications, he chaired the Governing Council of SCOAP3 (2014-2016), serves on many international boards and is project lead for the Open Access 2020 Initiative.

About Open Access 2020:
Program Day 1
Session 1 – Introduction to Open Access 2020
This session will introduce the Open Access 2020 Initiative, the economic analysis at its foundation, its vision, mission and approach. Participants will also gain an understanding of the open access landscape and the essential role that the OA2020 Initiative holds in driving the transformation of the scholarly
publishing system to open.
Session 2 - The increasing relevance of open access
While libraries have traditionally been responsible for provisioning access to research, the OA transition demands the scope of their work be broadened. In this session, Dr. Schimmer will shed light on the increasing relevance of OA publishing and the financial implications this has for institutions.
Session 3 – Gathering and analyzing publication data in preparation for the transformation
In this session we will review some methods adopted by institutions to uncover the publishing trends of their researchers and how the data have been analyzed to inform open access strategies.
Session 4 – The OA2020 transformation roadmap
As libraries currently manage subscription expenditures and publisher negotiations, they will play a lead role in designing and implementing their institution’s roadmap, with the support and engagement of faculty and
administration. In this session we will learn steps that can be helpful in creating your own roadmap to drive the open access transformation in your local context and have impact on a global scale.
Session 5 – The MPDL OA2020 transformation roadmap
Day 2
Session 6 - Assessing value beyond COUNTER statistics and negotiation strategies
Libraries typically rely on publishers to provide COUNTER statistics to assess the value of their subscriptions, but when libraries bring other elements such as publishing and citation data into their value assessment, the picture can be very different. With new value metrics, libraries are empowered with new leverage in publisher negotiations
Session 7 – Access Beyond Subscriptions
In every negotiation strategy, parties must have a plan in place in case they need to step away from the table. In this session we will share insights on some
analytics and linking tools that can support a library's strategy and, if necessary, help them prepare in case of a stand-off.
Session 8 – Transformative Agreements
This session will introduce the goals of transformative agreements, such as “offsetting” and “read and publish”, and illustrate how they work, with practical examples and lessons learned from the Max Planck Digital Library and beyond. Session 9 – Open Access Strategies
As the roles of the libraries and consortia evolves and expands, negotiating and managing agreements with pure gold open access publishers represents a new way to support researchers and drive open access into the scholarly publishing system. Additionally, there are many alternative business models for open access publishing to be explored and supported. In this session we will illustrate some new ways libraries can invest in open access..
Session 10 – Be Part of the Transformation
