A B S T R A C T This stud y was carried ou t to investiga te the effects of in vitro culture con ditio n and amo ng lines o n g ro wth pa ttern of la teral b uds from no dal cutting s o f P h a l a e n o p s i s flower stalk s. The ratio of bu d g rowing into s ho ot fro m nod al cu tting s of flower stalk s were 9 0 .9 % an d 5 4 .4 % o n MS and hyp o nex medium, resp ectively . Th e numb er o f bud s g rown vegetativ ely were increa sed remarkably on th e MS med ium co ntainin g 5 mg /L BA. Th e rate o f b ud s g ro wn vegetativ ely was h igh er in ba sal and mid dle p arts than in u pp er p art of flo wer stalk s. The flower sta lk section s c ultu red at 2 5 ~2 8℃ sh owed th e high est ratio of veg etative gro wth . Med iu m con tamin atio n was decreased b y p retreatmen t of etio latio n to the flower sta lk. Ho wever, the pretreatmen t did n ot sho w sp ecific effec ts o n s ho ot d evelo pmen t and red uctio n o f ph eno lic co mpo un d. Average shoo t nu mber which was fo rmed from flower stalk segmen ts in 27 of 3 0 accession s were 3.1 7, while high n umb er of shoo ts were obtained from P h a l. 30 20 an d P h a l.
