Fe
60V
40mechanical alloys were produced by using a SPEX 8000 Mixer & Miller. The alloy- ing process was performed by milling for 1, 2, 4, 6, 12, and 24 hours. The magnetic properties and structures were analyzed by using a vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and an X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis. The saturation magnetization of the Fe
60V
40mixed powder decreased gradually with increasing milling time until 12 hours and almost saturated at 24 hours. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the V peaks disappeared in the allays milled for 6 hours or more. EXAFS analysis showed that the local structures began to change after the sample had been milled for 6 hours, and a different local structure was observed after 12 hours. This confirms that the alloy was formed in 12 hours.
