올해는 광복 70주년이 되는 역사적인 해입니다. 우리 현대사의 ‘위대한 여정’을 되돌아보고 ‘새로 운 도약’에 나서야 할 때입니다.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the nation’s liberation. It is time to look back on the ‘great journey’ of its modern history and take leap ahead.
우리가 이룩한 산업화와 민주화를 토대로 한반도에 평화와 통일의 꽃을 활짝 피워야 합니다. 이 것이 우리 세대가 이루어야 할 시대적 사명입니다.
On the foundations of industrialization and democratization achieved, we need to achieve reunification and secure peace on the Korean peninsula. This is the call of our times.
5.18을 통해 민주화의 전기를 만들어 온 것처럼 평화통일의 새 역사를 이루는 데도 광주시민과 전남도민 여러분이 앞장서 주시기 바랍니다.
Just as you played an instrumental role in democratization through the uprising, I call upon you to yet again lead the efforts to reunify the nation.
다시 한 번 5.18민주영령들의 영원한 안식을 빌며, 여러분 모두의 건강과 행운을 기원합니다.

교육현장에서 헌신하고 계신 선생님 여러분,
제34회 스승의 날을 진심으로 축하하며, 교육발전에 기여한 공로로 수상을 하신 분들께도 축하와 격려의 말씀을 드립니다.
My fellow citizens!
Hard working teachers!
My sincere congratulations on the 34th anniversary of the Teachers Day and to those who have been awarded prizes for their contributions to educational development.
특별히 오늘 이 자리에는 저의 중고등학교 시절 은사님 두 분께서 함께해 주셨습니다.
I have to admit that I am overjoyed to have two of my middle and high school teachers here today.
돌이켜보면, 학창시절에 저를 가르치시고 이끌어 주셨던 은사님들이 계셨기에 미래의 꿈을 꿀 수 있었고 삶의 바른 가치를 가지고, 소신과 원칙을 버리지 않고 살아올 수 있었던 것 같습니다.
Looking back, I have been able to keep my dreams alive thanks to my teachers and because of them I have been able to live my life with moral values and principles.
그동안 어려운 여건 속에서도 늘 제자들의 앞날을 걱정하며 바른 교육을 위해 애쓰고 계신 선생 님들께 진심으로 감사드립니다.
I would like to seize this moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to the teachers who are concerned about the future of their students and devote themselves to build their character despite various challenges.
존경하는 선생님 여러분,
광복 이후 지난 70년 동안 우리 교육이 이뤄온 성과는 참으로 놀랍고 위대했습니다. 식민통치와 전쟁을 겪으면서 황폐해질 대로 황폐해진 교육환경을 선생님들의 열정과 사명감으로 극복해냈고, 부모님들의 남다른 교육열이 뒷받침해주셨습니다.
Honorable teachers! What education in Korea has achieved over the last 70 years is a wonder indeed. Colonial rules and fratricidal war left the educational environment devastated. Our teachers have endured the circumstances full of passion and a sense of mission. The extraordinary educational zeal of parents also helped.

우리나라가 오늘과 같은 발전을 이룰 수 있었던 것도 자라나는 세대에게 지식과 용기 그리고 희 망을 심어주면서 수많은 인재를 길러내신 선생님들이 계셨기 때문입니다.What we are today is credited with the teachers, who inspired the growing generation with knowledge, courage and hope.
제가 만났던 수많은 외국의 지도자들은 우리나라의 우수한 선생님들과 교육시스템을 부러워하면 서, 우리의 경험과 노하우를 전수받기 위해 노력하고 있었습니다. Many leaders of foreign countries that I have met envied our teachers and our educational system and they were striving to learn from our experience.
저는 현재 우리가 직면하고 있는 저성장·저고용·고령화의 위기도 교육을 통해 활로를 찾을 수 있 다고 믿습니다.I have a belief that the low-growth, low employment and population aging we face today can be addressed through education.
지금은 하나의 창의적 아이디어가 새로운 시장을 만들고, 창조적 인재 한 사람이 인류의 삶을 변 화시키는 창조경제와 지식 정보화 시대입니다.Today we are living in a world where one creative idea can spawn a new market and a creative talent can bring changes to human lives. In other words, we are living in an age of creative economy and knowledge and information.
자원도, 자본도 없이 인재의 힘으로 성장을 이뤄왔던 우리에게는 오히려 지금이 더 큰 기회의 문 을 열 수도 있는 시대인 것입니다.
To us, who have made it with neither resources nor capital, this moment can become an opportunity.
그렇게 되기 위해서는 우리 교육도 과감하게 패러다임을 바꾸고, 풍부한 창의력과 상상력을 갖춘 인재를 길러내서 시대의 도전에 적극적으로 대처해 나가야 하겠습니다.
That would require us to change our educational paradigm, cultivate talents with creativity and imagination so that they can confront the challenges of our times.
이럴 때일수록 우리 사회가 중심을 잡고, 올바른 길로 나아가기 위해서는 선생님들의 역사관과 교육관, 역할이 매우 중요합니다.
It is all the more important at this point in time that the society stay on the right track following the moral compass. The journey requires right perception of history and education of teachers.
우리 사회에서 자유민주주의의 가치에 대한 신념과 나라를 지키고자 하는 굳건한 애국심을 키우 는 것은 나라의 운명과 직결됩니다.
Deep trust in liberal democracy and strong patriotism are intertwined with the destiny of the nation.

과거 이스라엘 국민들이 전쟁이 터졌을 때, 외국에 있던 유학생들까지 나라를 지키기 위해 귀국 했던 데에는 조국에 대한 사랑과 신뢰를 가질 수 있게 했던 교육의 힘이 컸다고 생각합니다.
앞으로 안에서 우리 사회를 혼란에 빠뜨리려는 시도가 있을 수 있는데, 자유민주주의에 대한 확 고한 신념과 애국심이 뒷받침될 수 있도록 하는데, 교육현장의 선생님들께서 중심이 되어 주시길 부탁드립니다!
존경하는 선생님 여러분,
과거 우리는 스승의 그림자도 밟지 않는 엄격한 교육풍토를 지켰었는데, 스승에 대한 그와 같은 존경심은 제자들의 인성과 인격을 닦아 나가는 데 큰 영향을 주었습니다.
아무리 시대가 변화해도 스승의 역할은 바뀔 수 없습니다.
스승에 대한 예의와 존경심을 잃는다면, 그 피해는 우리 사회에 고스란히 돌아오게 됩니다.
정부는 선생님들이 존경받는 사회 분위기를 만들고, 여러분께서 자긍심을 가지고 교육개혁의 주 체가 될 수 있도록 적극 뒷받침해 나갈 것입니다.
여러분께서도 행복한 교실, 꿈이 이루어지는 교육이 될 수 있도록 함께 힘을 모아주시기 바랍니 다.
