Congratulation and best wishes to KRIHS on the occasion of its 30thanniversary, and best wishes for another 30 successful year.

Peter Gordon Professor, University of Southern California

The outstanding work done by KRIHS researchers is known around the world. My University has long benefited from visits by KRIHS scholars and we are proud to have participated in the training of many of them who have studied and earned degrees at USC. Increasing prosperity, as in Korea, creates a demand as well as a capacity for high-quality research. And high-quality research facilitates further prosperity and development. KRIHS is a perfect example of this virtuous cycle.

Harry Timmermans Professor, Eindhoven University of Technology

I had the pleasure of visiting KRIHS in the summer of 2007 and learned about the activities of the Institute and their plans for the future. It also led to continued contacts with regard to specific plans and research activities in the field of transportation. I was impressed by their vision and mission about effective future land use and development. A multidisciplinary approach seems highly important for sustainable future development. I congratulate KRIHS on their 30thanniversary and wish the Institute will continue their excellent work and be successful in realizing their vision for the future development of South Korea.

Over the course of its impressive history of original, evidence-based policy research, KRIHS has made solid contributions not only to Korea but also to scholars, planners and governments throughout the world. Its innovative policy initiatives reveal the impressive dynamics of Korea in ways that stimulate innovative thinking well beyond its shores.

After I have had the honour to publish in the journal “Planning and Policy”, and, moreover, since I had the chance to study and discuss the efforts, the impressive successes and the remaining problems of spatial planning in Korean urban areas last year, I very much appreciate the work of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS) and its important magazine “Planning and Policy”. I take the chance of the 30th anniversary of KRIHS to cordially congratulate and to wish a fruitful continuation of the successful and excellent work for the decades to come.

Particularly I hope, both KRIHS and ”Planning and Policy” will be able to further support close cooperation and scientific exchange between Korea and Germany.

Heiko Diestel Professor, Technische Universität Berlin

Aqua Eco Mundi congratulates the Korean Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS) for 30 years of excellent work! For brevity, I just mention here three publications by KRIHS which represent important contributions to planning for the future of Korea. “The Fourth Comprehensive National Territorial Plan in Korea(2000-2020)” gives important insights into the development strategies and the development directions of regions in Korea. The regular publications ”Space and Environment/KRIHS Gazette” and “Planning and Policy” give up-to-date information on the progress of urban planning activities in Korea and stimulate the discussion on the relevant subjects.

We look forward to KRIHS future contributions to assure an ecologically and economically sound management of the nation’s resources and the provision of good living conditions for the Korean people.

I wish to extend hearty congratulations to KRIHS on its thirty years of existence!

KRIHS has a long history of supporting and conducting research to foster sound policy decisions for addressing critical spatial distribution in areas such as transportation, environmental monitoring and resources, and development. For the next thirty years, I challenge KRIHS to continue and extend its support of multi- disciplinary research efforts. Environmental, statistical, mathematical, physical, and biological scientists must work together with engineers and social scientists in order to achieve sustained solutions to address the major issues faced today by Korea (and the world). The problems we face today are simply too difficult to be solved by single-disciplinary teams working in isolation. Once again, congratulations to KRIHS on its 30thanniversary!

I am delighted to extend my congratulatory remarks on the special occasion of the 30thAnniversary of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements(KRIHS).

Established in 1978 to maximize the welfare of citizens of Korea by efficiently utilizing scarce physical resources, KRIHS became one of the leading national physical planning agencies in the world. In a world of change, that's an impressive accomplishment. As a scholar in urban and regional planning, it has been always gratifying for me to read documents released by KRIHS that shed lights on ways to integrate various disciplines for solving complex human settlement issues. On the occasion of its anniversary, I would like to congratulate its successive presidents and 존 킴

It is with great pleasure that I extend my heartfelt congratulations to President Park Yangho and everyone at the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements on the 30thanniversary of the founding of this vitally important organization. The momentous mission of KRIHS is even more relevant today than it was in 1978, and its significance will only increase in the future as the development and implementation of policies needed to enhance the sustainability of Korea's territorial resources and the quality of life of the Korean people depend on a strong, knowledge-based foundation. This foundation has been built by the dedication and leadership provided by KRIHS. Congratulations!

Paul Tesar Professor, North Carolina State University

In distinction to sources of energy, LAND a collective possession of the people of a nation is the ultimate limited and precious resource: there is no “renewable” form of land. The importance of building a foundation of knowledge for the appropriate and sensitive use of this resource therefore cannot be overstated.

An equally precious possession is CULTURE as it is embodied in the existing patterns of landscapes and human settlements. Building upon the solid foundation of the past thirty years we wish KRIHS well to succeed in giving us the necessary knowledge and vision to plan not only for the practical and utilitarian aspects, but ever more for the qualitative dimension of this resource: to create a sense of place, dignity, beauty, pride, belonging, and identity for generations to come.

Ray Hudson Professor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Durham University

Territorial and spatial planning are critical issues in the contemporary world as governments and societies seek to contain the effects of uneven development, promote sustainable economic development and ensure an equitable distribution of wealth and well-being. It gives me great pleasure to acknowledge the important work of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS) on the occasion of the 30thanniversary of its foundation. I trust that it will continue to develop its research agenda and the important work that it carries out into issues of territorial development and planning.

I would like to offer my congratulations to the KRIHS on its 30thanniversary. I also wish to congratulate your government on its considerable achievements. Korean cities have been evolving rapidly over the last three decades: lessons have been learned, and new directions are being set for the future. KRIHS has a key role to play in this process of advancement, and establishing a long-term vision for sustainable urban living, supported by more sophisticated planning policies, should be a priority. KRIHS should continue to lead the way forward.

I am delighted to extend my warmest congratulations to KRIHS on the occasion of its 30thanniversary. I also wish to compliment the Institute on the continuing success to its efforts as a leading research center, not only in Korea but in the world generally.

Over the years, I have very much enjoyed exchanging ideas with many different colleagues at KRIHS. Given the excellence of its staff, I am confident that the high quality of the research on urban and regional development for which the Institute is justly renowned will continue for at least another 30 years to come. I look forward to many fruitful occasions in the future for learning from your efforts.

I congratulate KRIHS on the 30th anniversary of producing high quality and significant research aimed at enriching the quality of housing and urban life of Korean citizens. When I visited KRIHS in 1996, I was impressed by friendliness of the staff, the scope of the research that was being conducted, and the attractive physical surroundings. Since that time, I have maintained contact with KRIHS though its publications and many of its researchers who did their graduate studies or post- doctoral work at the University of Michigan. Many best wishes to all of them and the organization for at least 30 more years of success.

KRIHS established some 30 years ago has grown into a global leader in settlement planning and territorial policy. It has sparked the development of numerous important debates in settlement and territorial development including design and administration of special economic development zones at all scales including science cities at the higher end and rural settlement and management structures at the lower.

In this regard its work has contributed globally to a much better understanding of the interface between national development policy and the management of local implementation elements.

Hilda Blanco Professor, University of Washington

Congratulations to KRIHS on its thirtieth anniversary! KRIHS has become the premier research institute in Korea on national territorial and economic planning with a distinguished staff, internationally recognized. It has been my privilege to have met and collaborated with over a dozen of its researchers, through our KHRIS- UW research partnership, and through my visit to the Institute in September of 2007.

In particular, I have followed the work of KRIHS on national territorial and economic planning, including its plans for urban growth management, and for reunification with North Korea, which are impressive plans in their scope and farsightedness. Best wishes for the next productive 30 years!

Paul Claval Endowed Professor, The Paris-sorbonne University

The mechanisms which insured the conservation of nature and the building of humanized environments in traditional societies have been deeply upset by modernization: as a result, it is necessary to imagine new strategies in order to achieve those permanent objectives of human life on this Earth. Hence my interest in the research developed by KRIHS, in a country where the industrial revolution and globalization had been specially strong. I deeply appreciate the concern of KRIHS for developing international exchange on these difficult problems.

Congratulations on KRIHS’s 30thbirthday! KRIHS has been an extraordinary planning think tank that is central to Korea’s rapid urban growth and economic expansion. There is no comparison in the world. Thanks to President Park, Yang-Ho, my department, the Department of Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington, has established a sister relationship with KRIHS. Our on-going collaboration has spawned many activities such as student internships, livable cities projects, planners' fieldtrips to Seattle, and visiting scholarships. I hope that KRIHS 크리스틴 배

For your 30thanniversary I would like to send you the best wishes from your German counterpart, the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning. We have collaborated with you for a long time, especially after the German unification. And I have had the privilege to visit you in Korea and to experience your scientific excellence and your hospitality. I think this cooperation has turned into a friendship with the Institute and with many colleagues as well. We would like to continue this friendly and fruitful relationship. We wish you all the best for the future, for your country and your Institute. In Germany, we use the Latin phrase “ad multos annos” to signalize and to wish you a long life. AD MULTOS ANNOS and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Harry W. Richardson Professor, University of Southern California

I would like to celebrate and rejoice at the 30thanniversary of KRIHS. Thirty years ago, I was invited to KRIHS's first international conference, and it changed my life. I have been deeply involved in Korea’s planning problems since then, and this year on sabbatical and with agrant from the Korea Foundation, I hope to write my seminal book: Regional and Urban Policy and Planning in the Korean Peninsula. This book will analyze both South and North Korea. It would never have happened without the initial invitation. I look foward to discussing the propects for reunification with all my Korean colleagues. I would like to thank all my friends in KRIHS, Korean universities and research institutes for making my intellectual life so stimulating.

God bless South Korea!
