GRAMMAR+
✪ 관계대명사
▸두 문장을 하나로 만들면서(관계) 앞 문장에 오는 말(선 행사)과 같은 단어 대신에(대명사) 관계대명사를 쓴다.
사람 사물 사람+사물/동물 선행사포함
주격 who/ that which, that that what 목적격 who(m), that which, that that what 소유격 whose whose, of
which - -
① 관계대명사 주격
Jane is the girl. + She loves me.
→ Jane is the girl who loveⓢ me.
that 동사 + 목적어 → 주격 제인은 나를 사랑하는 소녀이다.
This is the book. + It belongs to me.
→ This is the book which belongⓢ to me.
that 동사 + 목적어 → 주격 이것은 내게 속한 책이다.
② 관계대명사 목적격
Jane is the girl. + I love her.
→ Jane is the girl (whom) I love.
(that) 주어 + 동사 → 목적격 (생략가능)
(who) (회화체에서 사용가능)
제인은 내가 사랑하는 소녀이다.
This is the book. + I want it.
→ This is the book (which) I want.
(that)주어 + 동사 → 목적격 (생략가능)
이것은 내가 원하는 책이다.
③ 관계대명사 소유격
Jane is the girl. + Her nickname is "Princess."
→ Jane is the girl whose nickname is "Princess."
제인은 별명이 “공주”인 소녀이다. 명사 + be동사 → 소유격 This is the book. + Its cover is red.
→ This is the book whose cover is red.
이것은 표지가 빨간 책이다. 명사 + be동사 → 소유격 This is the book. + The cover of it is red.
→ This is the book the cover of which is red.
→ This is the book of which the cover is red.
④ 관계대명사 that만 (주로)
선행사가 [사람+동물], [사람+사물], 최상급, 서수, the only, the very, the same, the last, all, every, any, no, 의문사 (선행사가 사람인 경우는 who/whom을 써도 무방하나 사물일 경우는 which는 불가능하다)
He is the only man that we can trust.
그는 우리가 신뢰할 수 있는 유일한 남자이다.
⑤ 관계대명사 that ✖
ⓐ 소유격 ⓑ 전치사 that ⓒ ,(comma) that
⑥ 관계대명사 생략가능
Look at the boy. He is sleeping under the tree.
→ Look at the boy (who is) sleeping under the
tree. (주격+be동사) 생략가능
나무 밑에서 자고 있는 그 소년을 봐봐.
The cafe is the place. + I met her in the place.
→ The cafe is the place which I met her in.
그 카페는 내가 그녀를 만났던 곳이다. ⇕목적격생략가능
→ The cafe is the place that I met her in.
→ The cafe is the place in which I met her.
전치사 + 목적격 생략 불가
→ The cafe is the place in that I met her.
전치사 + that 불가
⑦ 선행사 포함 관계대명사 what (것) Do you know the thing. + I mean it.
→ Do you know the thing which) I mean.
→ Do you know the thing (that) I mean.
→ Do you know the thing what I mean.
선행사 포함관계대명사이기 때문에 선행사가 있으면 what을 쓸 수 없다.
→ Do you know what I mean?
너는 내가 의미하는 것을 알겠니?
⑧ 관계대명사의 한정적 용법, 계속적 용법
ⓐ 한정적 용법 : 뒤에서 꾸며준다.(수식) He had two sons who became doctors.
(다른 아들이 더 있을 수 있다.) 그는 의사가 된 두 아들이 있다.
ⓑ 계속적 용법 : 끊었다가 계속 이어 해석한다.

그는 아들이 둘 있는데, 그리고 그들은 의사가 되었다.
⒝ I gave him advice, which he ignored.

⒞ Everyone likes her, who is so kind. (이유) , for she is so kind.

⒟ I haven't seen her, whom I live next to.(양보) , who I live next to.

① can / could have pp : ~할 수 있었을 것이다 He could have won the race.
그는 경주를 이길 수도 있었을 것이다.
→ can’t / couldn’t have pp : ~했을리 없다. (과거추측) She couldn’t have been sick.그녀가 아팠을 리가 없다.
② may / might have pp : ~했을지도 모른다 (과거추측) He may have been tired. 그는 피곤했을지도 모른다.
③ must have pp : 틀림없이 ~했을 것이다 (과거추측) She must have forgotten the password.
그녀는 비밀번호를 틀림없이 잊었을 것이다.
④ would have pp : ~했을 텐데. (못했다 → 후회) I would have studied hard to pass the exam.
나는 시험에 합격하기 위해 열심히 공부했을 텐데.
⑤ should have pp : ~했어야 했다. (후회) You should have been more careful.
너는 좀 더 주의해야만 했다.
→ shouldn’t have pp : ~하지 말았어야 했다. (후회) I shouldn’t have eaten ice cream.
나는 아이스크림을 먹지 말았어야 했다.

① so that... (목적) = in oder that
I studied hard so that I could pass the exam.
나는 시험에 합격하기 위하여 열심히 공부했다.

= I studied hard for the purpose of passing the exam.
= I studied hard with a view to passing the exam.

③ so ~ that... (원인과 결과) = such ~ that...
