M : Mom, I sprained my ankle while playing soccer. I should go see a doctor.

W: Let me see. Oh, it doesn’t look good.

M : I can hardly move and it’s getting more painful.

W: ______________________________________________________________

W: Robin, did you make a reservation for our team dinner next week?

M : No, not yet. I don’t know any good restaurant around our office.

W: Ah! Jake from the sales department knows a lot of good restaurants nearby.

M : ______________________________________________________________

M : Hi. I’ve come to apply for the scholarship. Is this the right place?

W: Yes, but the man in charge is out for lunch.

M : I see. Then, shall I wait here until he comes back?

W: ______________________________________________________________

W: Hello, class! I told you last time how chewing your food can help with digestion. Today I’d like to explain the effect of food-chewing on pronunciation, especially for children. Let me tell you about it. As you chew, the lips and tongue work together to break down the food. This chewing action uses the same mouth muscles needed for talking.

M : Hello, everyone. Welcome to this online art class. I’m your teacher, Andrew Williams. Today we’ll explore the essential techniques for drawing. Before that, I’d like to ask that you keep these rules in mind during this video conferencing class. First, please mute your microphone when you’re not speaking. Also, if you’d like to ask a question, please raise your hand before you speak. Finally, make sure you turn on your camera so that we can see your face. Thank you for your cooperation, and I hope you enjoy this class.

M : Ms. Johnson, what are you doing with those brochures?

W: I’m looking for some career programs for my class next month.

M : Are you planning to go out with your students?

W: Yes. I think hands-on experience works better than learning by books when making career decisions.

M : Sure. I totally agree with you.

W: I wish students could have more chances to participate in career-related programs.

M : Right. Job simulation programs will help students be exposed to various jobs.

W: Definitely. I believe students need to have more opportunities for career-related experience.

M : I hope you find a good program for your students.

W: Hi, James. What’s that box you’re holding?

M : Hi, Rebecca. This is a gift for myself.

W: A gift for yourself? Sounds fun. Normally we get gifts from other people, though.

M : Right. But sometimes I reward myself with something I really like.

W: Interesting. Still, it’s not common to get a reward from yourself.

M : Yeah. But when you get a reward from someone else, it might be something you don’t want. And after all, you’re the one who best knows what you like.

W: That makes sense. Once I got a book as a reward but I didn’t like it.

M : Right. Since you know what you like best, you’re the one who can give yourself the best reward.

W: Sounds good. I should try it.

M : Hello, Ms. Taylor. Thank you for inviting me.

W: Oh, Mr. Livingstone. Thank you for coming.

M : I’m excited to hear your lovely voice tonight. I heard seats are sold out.

W: Yeah. I’m grateful to my fans.

M : I heard you practiced a lot for this concert. How are you feeling tonight?

W: Couldn’t be better. And the last song is the song you composed for me.

M : That’s an honor. Your voice is always inspiring to me.

W: I’m flattered. I love all the songs you’ve made.

M : I look forward to continuing working together.

W: Thanks a lot. I hope you enjoy the concert.

W: Yeah, that’s why I’m wearing short sleeves.

W: Number Two

M : Good morning. How may I help you?

W: Hi, I’d like to open a bank account.

W: Number Three

M : Do you know when the shop closes?

W: I think it closes around 6 in the evening.

W: Number Four

M : You look cold. Do you want me to close the window?

W: Could you do that? It’s quite chilly.

W: I’d like to, but I have to do some paperwork today.

M : You look tired. How about doing it tomorrow?

W: I have to finish it now because I’m supposed to give it to my boss by tonight.

M : You’re so busy. Is there anything I can do for you?

W: Yes, please. I have to get this laptop back to Mr. Logan in the marketing department.

M : I’m on my way there. I’ll do that for you now.

W: Thank you.

(6)

M : I ate at a restaurant nearby. What’s up?

W: Our team was supposed to have lunch together, remember?

M : Oh, I forgot. I’m sorry.

W: I called you, but you didn’t answer. Is your phone broken or did your battery die?

M : No, I accidentally left my phone at home today.

W: That’s why. I even thought you might have changed your number.

M : Oh, I’m terribly sorry.

W: We ended up cancelling the lunch meeting since you couldn’t come.

M : Really? I’m sorry. I’ll apologize to the rest of the team members.

[Telephone rings.]

M : Hello, June’s Restaurant.

W: Hi, I’d like to place an order for delivery to 13 Main Street.

M : Sure. What would you like?

W: I want to have the roast beef sandwich. How much is it?

M : It’s nine dollars.

W: Then, I’ll have two roast beef sandwiches. And, what kind of salad do you have?

M : For delivery, we only offer chicken salad. It’s seven dollars.

W: I’ll have one salad.

M : Two roast beef sandwiches and one chicken salad. Is that all?

W: Yes, that’s all.

W: Read & Play? What do we do?

M : We read some picture books to kids.

W: Sounds interesting. Where do we go for the program?

M : We go to the kindergarten next to the library.

W: How long does the program last?

M : It says the program lasts for eight weeks.

W: All right. How can we apply?

M : We can just fill in the application form on their website.

W: I see. Thanks for finding this program.

W: Hello, Love Animal listeners! Today we’ll check out an endangered animal called the pika. Pikas are small mammals that are only seven to eight inches long. Living on sloping rocks and feeding on grasses on hillsides, this little creature is very rare. The species was discovered in 1983.

Unfortunately, its numbers have been declining since then. This is because their habitat is being affected by climate change. Most pikas have adapted to living in cold environments and cannot tolerate heat. So, rising temperatures have forced them to live in higher mountain areas. It’s time to give them our care.

M : Honey, are you watching the home shopping channel?

W: Yeah, they’re having a promotion on curtains.

M : It’s about time we changed them. How wide do the curtains need to be?

W: They should be wider than three meters.

M : Right. What color do you want? I think beige would look neat.

W: Well, I like that color, too. But it doesn’t match our wallpaper.

M : Hmm..., you’re right. Let’s get one of the other colors then.

W: Okay. Should we get blackout curtains?

M : Yes. I want to get sound sleep at night by blocking the street lights.

W: Me, too. Let’s choose one with that function.

M : That leaves us two options. Which do you prefer?

W: I’ll go with the cheaper one.

M : Great. Let’s take it.

W: Tom, do you have any plans this Saturday?

M : Yes, Mom. I’m going to practice dancing with my friends for the school festival.

W: I see. Do you think you’ll be home before dinner?

M : I don’t think so. We’re supposed to practice until 8 p.m.

W: Can you finish a bit earlier?

M : Why, Mom?

W: We’re having a special dinner around six to celebrate your sister being accepted to university.

M : Oh, I see.

W: And your grandparents are coming. They’d love to see you as well.

M : I miss them a lot, too. I think I have to be there.

W: Then, why don’t you come and join us for dinner?

(9)

M : Rachel, how was school today?

W: The student president candidates gave election speeches, Dad.

M : How were they?

W: Both of the candidates seemed very competent and smart.

M : I see. Have you decided who to vote for?

W: I’m still thinking. One is very popular with my friends, and the other is trustworthy and keeps his promises.

M : Well, when it comes to voting, a candidate’s trustworthiness should come first.

W: Actually, I’m close to the popular candidate.

M : In elections, it doesn’t matter who you are close to.

W: I got it, Dad. Keeping one’s word is more important.

M : So you know who to vote for, right?

W: ______________________________________________________________

Fortunately he isn’t hurt, but his shirt is stained. Sophia apologizes for her carelessness. Michael says it’s okay and that it’s just an accident. However, Sophia really wants to tell him that she’d like to pay to have the shirt cleaned. In this situation, what would Sophia most likely say to Michael?

M : Hello, listeners. I’m Chris with Green Thumb Gardening. Many people find bugs unpleasant and try to get rid of them. However, some bugs can be a great help for gardening. First, as most of you know, bees are useful.

They assist with pollination in your garden. Next, dragonflies eat many bugs that damage your plants. Their digestion is incredibly fast, so they’re always looking for their next prey. Ladybugs are probably the most well-known of all the beneficial bugs in the garden. They eat quite a lot of the tiny harmful bugs. Then there are ground beetles. They appear at night to silently consume snails and other soil-dwelling pests.

They also enjoy feasting on weed seeds, which further protects your crops. If you see these beneficial bugs in your garden, please do not try to kill them. Stay tuned for more garden tips.
