After the industrial revolution accelerated the urban industrialization, humankind finally achieved the long-awaited modernization of comfort and convenience. On the contrary, this expedited modernization also caused some unexpected, adverse effects from various aspects. Environmentally, it created a threatening phenomenon of destroying the equilibrium of the earth's ecosystem, whereas, psychologically, it caused the deprivation of humanity and enslaved the supposed possessor, human, to his surrounding space in a highly commercial living environment, ultimately becoming an unemotional being. This is the current reality of today. Human lives in a real, existing space that includes nature, and space is a physical world that includes the realm of our ordinary experience. The existence and action of human are all connected to a spatial experience. And this kind of spatial experience is formed through physical perception. Human perceives space by his various sensory systems, and space, in turn, provides him with
varying experience and actions.
Architectural design consists of environment, human and space, and each factor get its meaning of existence through mutual interaction. After the 1960s, the concept and principle of modern architecture evolved from rationality to a psychological and symbolic principle. Therefore, the concept of space has a close relationship with phenomenology, which is one of the many trends trying to recover the lost humanity. In her phenomenology lecture, Merleau-Ponty states that the human body is the essence that perceives the world. The essence of space design is, most important, the fact that human uses and perceives space, and he fills his living in it. In this regard, as being the subject of space, the importance of human should be recognized, and, in terms of the 'humanization of space', space is perceived by the human body's sensory systems, and, by this perception, human and space form mutual relationship. Also, since the human's perception against a same situation varies, it is essential for the human perception to take on diversity.
The more artificial the functions, the more vitality space will lose.
Furthermore, space will be so saturated that it won't be even able to accommodate that artificial function. One way to solve this functional space problem is to give the flexibility of organic characteristic. Thus the relation between the human body and space should not be regarded as 'subject and object', i.e. 'me and object', but as a mutual relationship.
Space design makes a migrating moving-line using the characteristic of the body perception while considering the bodyand vision's movement, or brings the vision's movement by importing light. By using synesthetic factors, it turns more lively, and the combination of sense and memory may disturb or compare the perception or memory stemming from experience.
Also space is not a fixed, identicalbeing, but rather changes as time passes
by, and this change provides human with a different experience. Along with this time characteristic, space frequently uses the change of natural factors as well.
By these methods, the inexorably changing expressions of space will not be perceived as simple features of form. Space and the experiencing body will share an organic, mutual relationship, and the diversity of perception and the experiencing human will be considered together. And this possibility will be recognized.
