ABSTRACT

-Effects of Aroma hand massage on stress and fatigue in nurses with shiftwork

Hyun Jung Kim Directed by Professor Chun Ja Kim Department of Nursing The Graduate School Ajou University

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Aroma hand massage on stress and fatigue in nurses with shiftwork.

A nonequivalent control group, pre-test and post-test quasi experimental design was used.

45 ward nurses with shiftwork were assigned into the intervention group (n=24) and control group (n=21) respectively. The intervention group received aroma hand massage for 10 minutes per day, 5 minutes per hand, for 2 weeks, while the control group received an usual care. After 2 weeks later, scores of the perceived stress, physical and psychological stress response and level of fatigue were obtained from both groups.

The study was conducted between February and April 2012 and the collected data were analyzed using SPSS/PC Window 12.0 program. The homogeneity test between the intervention group and the control group was analyzed using Fisher's exact test and Independent t-test. Group differences in stress and fatigue were analyzed using χ²-test.

The results of this study are summarized as follow.

1) The score on the perceived stress of the intervention group was significantly higher than the control group (t =2.30, p=.034).

2) The score on physical and psychological stress response of the intervention group was lower than the control group but there was no significance (t= 1.40, p =.072).

3) The score on level of fatigue of the intervention group was significantly higher than the control group (t =3.656, p =.001).

It may be concluded that application of shiftwork nurses with aroma hand massage could contribute to the perceived stress, physical and psychological stress response and level of fatigue based on the results of this study.

Key words: aroma hand massage, nurse, stress and fatugue
