Read the following passages carefully and answer each question.
[A] Nature is a complex ecology in which every animal, plant, bird, every single species has its own part to play and the whole has its own independent integrity. We know even more than this thanks to the discovery of DNA and our decoding of the genome. Science writer Matt Ridley points out that the three-letter words of the genetic code are the same in every creature. “CGA means arginine, and GCG means alanine, in bats, in beetles, in bacteria. Wherever you go in the world, whatever animal, plant, or bug you look at, if it is alive, it will use the same dictionary and know the same code. All life is one.”The genetic code, except a few tiny local aberrations, is the same in every creature. We all use exactly the same language. The real miracle of this created world is, however, not the Platonic form of the leaf, but it’s the 250,000 different kinds of leaf there are. It’s not the idea of a bird, but the 9,000 species that exist. It is not a universal language; it is the 6,000 languages actually spoken. The miracle is that unity creates diversity, that unity up there creates diversity down here.
[B] Cultures are ‘thick’. They prescribe institutions and behavior patterns to guide humans in the paths which are right in a particular society. Above, beyond, and growing out of this maximalist morality, however, is a ‘thin’
minimalist morality that embodies reiterated features of particular thick or maximal moralities. Minimal moral concepts of truth and justice are found in all thick moralities and cannot be divorced from them. There are also “minimal moral negative injunctions,”most likely, rules against murder, deceit, torture, oppression, and tyranny. What people have in common is more the sense of a common enemy (or evil) than the commitment to a common culture. At times we march with others; mostly we march alone. Yet a thin minimal morality does derive from the common human condition, and universal dispositions are found in all cultures. Instead of promoting the supposedly universal features of one civilization, the requisites for cultural coexistence demand a search for what is common to most civilizations. In a multicivilizational world, the constructive course is to renounce universalism, accept diversity, and seek commonalities.
