ABSTRACT
The Comparison of Nurses' Cultural Competence from the Perception of Nurses and Foreign Patients

This research is a comparative study to compare the perceived cultural competence of Korean nurses between foreign patients and nurses in a general hospital. The participants of this study, nurses and foreign patients, were recruited from outpatient clinics and wards in the H general hospital located in Busan. And data were collected from March 31, 2014 to April 30, 2014 employing a structured questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using PASW statistics 18.0 for the descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation. The main results are as follows.
1. The mean score of perceived cultural competence for foreign patients was 5.17±0.92. Among four domains of cultural competence, the highest average score was cultural skill, followed by cultural sensitivity, cultural knowledge, and cultural awareness. However, the mean score of perceived cultural competence for nurses was 4.90±0.74. The highest average score was cultural awareness, followed by cultural sensitivity, cultural knowledge, and cultural skill.
2. Among demographic and cultural characteristics of foreign patients, the only statistically significant predictor was nursing service satisfaction. For the nurse group, work units, experience of contact with foreign patients, English skill, and job stress of nurses were statistically significant predictors of perceived cultural competence; the perception of cultural competence was significantly higher for the nurses who work in outpatient clinic, have more opportunities to contact with foreign patients, are more fluent in English, and have less job stress.
3. There were statistically significant differences between foreign patients and nurses on perceived cultural competence of Korean nurses, with cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, and cultural skill being statistically significant.
On the cultural awareness dimension, nurses rated themselves more highly than foreign patients, while the results were the opposite on the cultural knowledge and cultural skill dimensions.
The findings of this study showed that a statistically significant difference in perceived cultural competence of Korean nurses between foreign patients and nurses, and their perceptions were significantly different in each dimension. The statistically significant general characteristics of nurses were found. And it indicates that measures to improve the cultural competence are necessary. The findings could be used for developing the education program with consideration of foreign patients' need in the future.
