An Analytic Study on High School Music Textbook

-Focused on Popular

The definition on the value of music has shown various changes according to periods and history. There have been different value on what kinds of music are valuable according to periods but it is generally explained to have special characters that can't be limited to an absolute value frame beyond time and space. So it is reasonable to accept various music with positive attitude and reflect it for our development instead of insisting typical kinds of music or thinking of typical music for special classes. In this situation, popular songs tabooed in school education are focused with importance on new textbooks edited in the 7th amendment of national curriculum,

giving freshness at the turning point to new curriculum.

2002 is the first year to use new textbooks applied the 7th curriculum. This treatise analyzes popular songs in high school textbooks of this year. The music textbooks make music teachers have a lot of concerns. Our music textbooks almost made with songs play an absolute role in music classes. It is because music textbooks suggest learning content and learning process before teachers' instruction. So it is important to inspect new textbooks in 7th amendment. Especially the part of popular songs gives us more interests in quality and systematic aspects compared with the previous textbooks. To analyze the textbooks can be meaningful work and it can be the directions for popular songs in the future textbooks.

This treatise has philosophical basis that tries to accept the music textbooks positively with developmental aspects. Then in the main part, it analyzes the validity of popular songs in the textbooks on the basis of its curriculum. It starts where popular songs are in the current textbooks and includes comparison between teaching objects of the 7th music amendment curriculum and the previous and content analysis of the 7th curriculum and 7 kinds of high school music textbooks. Textbook analysis includes the distribution of

popular songs and content, which is limited to classification of tonalities, meters, composers, forms of performance and theme of content.

The conclusion is that after analyzing 7 kinds of textbooks.

First, the distribution of popular songs of the new textbooks increased more than that of the previous. It shows the popular songs become more important, indicating the content of music independently or selecting them as regular subject matters. But there are two patterns in the order of the title; one divided popular songs and applied music. The other includes popular songs into applied music regarding that in the same type as this. So we have to define the concept of popular songs and applied music and make unitarity between textbooks.

Second, in tonalities, the textbooks are made up of C major, G major and D major pieces and have major pieces much more than minor ones. In meters, 4/4 meters are prominent and there are more foreign composers than Korean composers. In performance, unisongs overwhelmed. In the theme of content, love between men and women is major. In pieces of songs related with lyrics, foreign songs are not translated in Korean but in its own language or in Korean without its own language. so it is desirable to have both languages.

With the above results, to make popular songs important is the try to give equal position to popular songs just like other kinds of music. And it is apt to the 7th curriculum which aims the improvement of musical emotions through various pieces. The merits that popular songs are accepted in the public education is to make them develope and give chances to discuss popular songs themselves.

It gives students to think about merits and demerits, rethinking of imitating without will and discussing the quality of songs to improve standard of popular songs. Above all, in the selection of popular songs, interesting pieces are selected which can give motivation to students. Studies are continued about what is the beneficial and valuable music to adolescent students and what kinds of music can satisfy their emotions on the beauty of music.
