Ⅳ. 다음 글을 읽고 물음에 답하시오. (15-20)

Women’s economic empowerment is arguably the biggest social change of our times. Just a generation ago, women were largely confined to repetitive, menial jobs. They were routinely subjected to casual sexism and were expected to abandon their careers when they married and had children. Today they are running some of the organisations that once treated them as second-class citizens. Millions of women have been given more control over their own lives.

And millions of brains have been put to more productive use. Societies that try to resist this trend – most notably the Arab countries, but also Japan and some southern European countries – will pay a heavy price in the form of wasted talent and frustrated citizens.

This revolution has been achieved with only a modicum of friction. Men have, (A) by and large, welcomed women’s invasion of the workplace.

Yet even the most positive changes can be incomplete or unsatisfactory. This particular advance comes with two stings. The first is that women are still under-represented at the top of companies. Only 2% of the bosses of America’s largest companies and 5% of their peers in Britain are women. They are also paid significantly less than men on average. The second is that juggling work and childrearing is difficult. Middle-class couples routinely complain that they have too little time for their children. But the biggest losers are poor children – particularly in places like America and Britain that have combined high levels of female participation in the labour force with a reluctance to spend public money on child care.

15. The best title for this passage would be "___."

① Women are doing well in both work and childrearing.

② Women have finally achieved their goals in every aspect of life.

③ Women are gradually taking over the workplace, but some obstacles remain.

④ Women are fairly paid like men.

16. According to this passage, which of the following sentences is NOT true?

① The percentage of women leading large companies is higher in Britain than in the U.S.

② The biggest social change of our times comes from women's economic power.

③ Women have increasingly participated in the labour force in America and Britain, but poor women have suffered from the lack of social concern over child care.

④ Women in the Arab countries have been given the same control over their lives as those in the U.S.

17. The underlined (A) can be replaced with _________.

① particularly ② generally ③ hopefully ④ satisfactorily

Stress is an everyday fact of life. You can't avoid it. Stress results (A) any change you must adapt to, ranging from the negative extreme of actual physical danger to the exhilaration of falling in love or achieving some long-desired success.

In between, day-to-day living confronts even the most well-managed life with a continuous stream of potentially stressful experiences. Not all stress is bad. In fact, stress is not only desirable, it is also essential to life. Whether the stress you experience is the result of major life changes or the cumulative effect of minor everyday hassles, it is how you respond to these events that determines the impact that stress will have on your life.

A source of stress is your thoughts. Your brain interprets complex changes in your environment and body and determines when to turn on the

"stress response." How you interpret and label your present experience and what you predict for your future can serve either to relax or to stress you. For example, interpreting a sour look from your boss to mean that you are doing an inadequate job is likely to be very anxiety-provoking. Interpreting the same look as tiredness or preoccupation with personal problems will not be as frightening.

Stress researchers Lazarus and Folkman (1984) have argued that stress begins with your appraisal of a situation. You first ask how dangerous or difficult the situation is and what resources you have to help you cope with it. Anxious, stressed people often decide that (1) an event is dangerous, difficult, or painful and (2) they don't have the resources to use.

18. According to this passage, what is NOT a potential source of stress?

① Daily, mundane hassles

② Your personal interpretation of a situation or a social cue

③ Major life changes

④ Anticipation of future stress

19. According to Lazarus and Folkman, what would be a characteristic of someone who deals well with stress?

① Avoiding stressful situations

② Being prepared for the worst to happen ③ Believing in his/her ability to handle a stressful situation successfully

④ Refusing to accept that a situation is painful or harmful to him/her

20. The most appropriate preposition in (A) is _____.

① on ② from ③ in ④ through
