2021 KOREAN AMBASSADOR’S CUP OPEN TAEKWONDO COMPETITION ONLINE POOMSAE CHALLENGE

1. Introduction

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, the 2021 Korean Ambassador’s Open Taekwondo Competition will be an online Poomsae Challenge. Poomsae are patterns or a set sequence of movements that consists of various fundamental stances, blocks, punches and kicks logically arranged in a meaningful order. Poomsae is used heavily in Taekwondo rank testing and a skilled instructor can discern the knowledge, skill level, strength, and focus of a student just by watching them perform Poomsae.

Important dates for the competition are as below

 Application submission is from 1st May, 2021 to 31st May, 2021

 Submissions of videos is up to 25th June, 2021 at midday

 Results will be released in July, 2021

2. How to participate

All participants are required to submit application forms via email to [email protected] by 31st May, 2021. They must then submit a pre-recorded video performing the relevant Poomsae by 25th June, 2021 at midday. Videos can be submitted in one of the following ways;

a. Via email to [email protected]

b. Delivery on USB to the Korean Embassy from 23rd to 25th June, 2021 at midday c. Posted on social media with the hashtag #2021TAEKWONDOUG and the Korean

Embassy’s Social Media tagged. The Embassy’s official social media is as below;

3. Who Can Participate

This is an open tournament therefore is open to both Taekwondo clubs and the general public and anyone can participate. There are two ways to participate;

a. Through a Taekwondo Club

b. Individually (not part of a Taekwondo Club)

For those participating as a part of a taekwondo club, a club representative should apply on behalf of all the athletes in their club using the club application form. And for participants that are not part of a Taekwondo Club apply using the individual application form.

4. Competition Method

The competition is online with individual, pair and team events and will be categorized according to age, gender and the belt that the participant holds. Black belt participants will compete by themselves and participants with other color belts will be grouped together. Black belt holders shall be required to provide their Dan numbers.

Participants that are part of a Taekwondo Club can participate in all three events (individual, pair and team) with other members of their Taekwondo club. And participants that are not a part of a taekwondo club can also participate in all the three events (individual, pair and team). They must form pairs and teams with other participants that are not part of a taekwondo club.

4.1 Individual Event

The competition is divided into the following categories below based on age and the color belt the participant holds. Male and Female participants will compete separately as per their respective age categories. Black belt holders shall compete by themselves and all other color belts shall be grouped together.

4.2 Pair Event

The pair event is open to teams of two participants composed of one male and one female, in the same age category and with the same belt classification. There are two age categories;

juniors including all participants below the age of 18 and seniors for all participants 18 years and above. They shall also be further grouped according to the color belts that they have. Black belt holders shall compete by themselves and all other color belts shall be grouped together therefore the two participants must both have black belts or both have other color belts.

The competition is divided into the following categories for the pair event

4.3 Team Event

The team event is open to teams of three participants of the same gender, same age category and the same belt qualification. There are two age categories; one for the juniors including all participants below the age of 18 and one for the seniors including all participants aged 18 and above. Team members are also required to either all be black belt or all have other color belts.

The competition is divided into the following categories for the team event

4.4 Poomsae Videos

These videos can be used as a reference for the different Poomsae techniques. These videos are all available on the Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Headquarters YouTube page.

5. Recording Guidelines

 Each participant should send in a prerecorded video of not more than 3 minutes performing the relevant Poomsae.

 At the beginning of the video, the athlete must make a standing bow conducted by the coach loudly saying “cha-ryeot” and “kyeong- rye.”

 After this, the participant should audibly declare their Name, Age and both the Poomsae that they are performing.

 After the introduction of the athlete, the athlete should follow orders by the coach starting with “joon-bi” “shi-jak.”

 Ensure that while recording, the whole body and its motion is seen during the Poomsae performance and the participant’s face(s) can be recognized.

 The camera must be in the horizontal position and must remain in the same position for the duration of the performance. Zooming in and out or panning up and down is not allowed.

 The videos should be saved starting with the event, name of participant, age and name of club. “EVENT_NAME_AGE_CLUB” for those applying as part of a club, and should be submitted in the same order as listed in the application form.

For individual participants, files should be saved starting with the event, name of

participant, age and name. “EVENT_NAME_AGE”

Pair and team events can be saved with only one name. The events can be abbreviated as follows; IND-INDIVIDUAL , PR- Pair, TM- Team

For example “IND_MUKASA_22_KAMPALA CLUB” or “PR_ASSIMWE_25_KAMPALA CLUB” or “TM_OKELLO_29_KAMPALA CLUB”

6. Rules and regulations

 This competition is an open competition. There are no qualification or age restrictions.

 Videos must be named in the prescribed format above otherwise will not be accepted.

 When picking up the prizes you may be required to show proof of age of the athletes.

 Ages of the participants will be considered as by June 25th, 2021 which is the last day of submission of the videos

 If the number of participants in a category is less than 4 competitors/teams the judges may decide to combine some groups

 All black belt holders will be required to provide their Dan numbers

7. Results announcing

Only the videos submitted in the right format with accompanying application forms will be considered. Application forms can be submitted from 1st May, 2021 to 31st May, 2021 and videos can be submitted up to 25th June, 2021 at midday. The results will be announced in July. Winners will be announced on the Embassy Social Media and will also be personally contacted.

8. Award Presentation

The awards for the individual competition will be presented as below;

- Gold Medal for 1st Place - Silver Medal for 2nd Place - Bronze Medal for 3rd Place

- Certificates of participation for all participants

For the pair event, awards will be presented as below;

- Gold Medal for 1st Place - Silver Medal for 2nd Place - Bronze Medal for 3rd Place

- Certificates of participation for all participants

For the team event, awards will be presented as below;

- Gold Medal for 1st Place

- Silver Medal for 2nd Place - Bronze Medal for 3rd Place

- Certificates of participation for all participants

There shall also be prizes awarded to - The best participants

- The best Taekwondo clubs

Prizes for the Taekwondo clubs and their members shall be picked by the club representative or manager who submitted the application.
