ENERGY, MINING &

INFRASTRUCTURE

High costs of research required to build an aeolian energy park in addition to a considerable bureaucratic process and limited competition compared to solar energy, would disincentive this segment. With this in consideration, the Chilean Ministry of Energy estimates that during the coming decade the aeolian installed capacity will duplicate to approximately 3,000MW.

In the other hand a recent study released by the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory (RAEL), University of California projected the evolution of the electric net from 2011 to 2031. The study concluded that aeolian energy would biggest source of non conventional renewable energy by 2030 surpassing 8,5GW.

Government of Chile explores the creation of electric interconnection with Argentina in the southern region

In 2017 the Government of Chile is evaluating critical aspects of plans to interconnect the country with Argentina through the Aysen region. Experts and authorities have identified at least five critical points to interconnect both countries in the Aysen region (Chile) and Chubt Province (Argentina). The Chilean Minister of Chile, Mr. Andrés Rebolledo indicated that a possible model would be to consider the southern part of the country as the energy swap.

Argentina and Chile are already connected through a transmission line of 600MW of capacity. These policies intend to boost regional development.

Chile is becoming attractive again for the so called

“swallow capitals”, or those short-term speculative investments.

January registered the highest figure in four years, with US$ 104 million; this figure is formed by US$58.16 million of public and corporative bonds and US$46.77 in local stock-market shares.

Coming electoral events in Latin America and particularly in Chile at the end of 2017 might be triggering this phenomenon, according to experts.

The Chilean Minister of Energy, Andrés Rebolledo, emphasizes the importance of developing an inclusive energy system in the country in which the citizenry could play a significant role. Particularly, regarding to

“energy efficient use and sustainability”, his views are relevant to the Energy Agenda 2014-2018, promoted and being implemented by the administration of President Michelle Bachelet. Structural changes are needed in order to introduce nuances to the energy system in Chile which is dominated by private firms and energy companies.

Minister Andres Rebolledo remarks the importance of an inclusive energy system

Water is the resource with the biggest participation among the renewable energy technologies with nearly 90%. However, as 2016 was a very dry time, thermo generation grew with a consequent drop of hydro generation by 18,4% compared with 2015. Lack of rain water and distortion on the weather due to global warming have contributed to the heavy drought experienced in Chile for six consecutive years. For these reasons, close monitoring is being enforced by the authorities.

due to drop of hydro energy generation Minister of Foreign Affairs Heraldo Muñoz:

“Chile will defend international trade”

Chile has progressively positioned itself as “defender of international free trade”, in words of Minister of Foreign Affairs Heraldo Muñoz. This in a world scenario of “uncertainty and protectionist pressures from different countries” mentioned the same Minister. Various initiatives promoting regional and global integration and commercial liberalization have produced mixed results, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership –TPP- and the Pacific Alliance. These among other initiatives are work in progress
