Australia has an enduring interest in a stable and prosperous Vanuatu and is Vanuatu’s largest bilateral donor.

Strategic direction

Aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Australia’s aid to Vanuatu has four strategic objectives:

• building resilient infrastructure and an environment for economic opportunity;

• improving early education and essential health services;

• improving community safety and resilience; and

• supporting cyclone recovery and reconstruction.

Our assistance is closely aligned to the Vanuatu Government’s recovery and development priorities. In 2017, Australia offered 13 Australia Awards for ni-Vanuatu to study at tertiary level in Australia and the region.

We supported 99 Australian Volunteers for International Development in Vanuatu in 2016-17.

Australia will continue to work closely with the Vanuatu Government to support recovery and reconstruction following Tropical Cyclone Pam.

Program highlights

• 89 per cent ($30.8 million) of Australia’s long-term Tropical Cyclone Pam recovery funding was allocated in 2016-17, including support for health and water infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, education and public buildings.

• Australia’s support for rural and mobile banking has increased access to financial services, with 6,040 new bank accounts opened in 2016 (45 per cent owned by women).

• Australia supported the Vanuatu Public Works Department to conduct routine maintenance on 1,181 km of rural roads, linking markets and communities.

• 68.5 per cent of children aged 12-59 months were fully immunised nationwide in 2016, an increase from 33 per cent in 2013.
