M : How can I help you?

W : I left my school bag on the subway this morning.

M : What line were you on?

W : I was on the green line.

M : Okay. W hat does your bag look like?

W : Well, it's square-shaped and my initials, KDH, are on the side.

M : Anything else?

W : There's a little teddy bear attached to the zipper.

M : Any other features?

W : It has two outside pockets.

M : All right. And could you please fill out this form?

W : Okay. Thank you very much for your help.

W : This is a great game, isn't it?

M : It's okay.

W : What do you mean it's okay? It's one of the best basketball games I've ever seen.

M : Yeah, I guess so.

W : What's wrong?

M : Sometimes when I watch a basketball game, I think about how good I could have been if I hadn't quit the team in high school.

W : Well, you needed to work to help out your family.

M : Yeah, but I just wish I hadn't quit. I could have been really good.

W : Well, you can't change the past.

M : I know.

W : M ost students who study English overseas stay either with a host family or in an apartment. An advantage of living with a host family is that students can practice their English in a natural environment outside of English class.

However, these students lose some of their freedom because they must follow the rules of the host family. On the other hand, students that live in apartments are free to come and go as they please. However, they do not have the same English-speaking environment at home as students who live with their host families. Therefore, they must make a greater effort to interact with native English speakers in order to practice their English outside of class.

W : Could you watch my plant while I'm on vacation for the next month?

M : Sure. No problem. What do I need to do?

W : W ell, the first thing you need to do is to water it every three days. And you also need to keep it out of direct sunlight.

M : Well, I can keep it on my living room table. There's no sunlight in that room.

W : Another thing you need to do is to clean the leaves with a soft cloth.

M : How often?

W : Once a week. And the last thing you need to do is to play it classical music.

M : Really? You play music for your plant?

W : Well, I noticed that it grows really well whenever I play classical music.

M : Is that it? Or is there anything else I need to do?

W : No, that's it.

W : Good morning, Tom.

M : Hi, Laura. You look like you're in a hurry.

W : I am. I have a meeting that starts in ten minutes, but I also need to go to the post office to mail these letters. Are you feeling okay?

M : W ell, I've got a bit of a headache. I'm going to the drugstore to get som e aspirin. I could m ail those letters for you if you w ant.

W : Really? That would be great. I should have mailed them last week, but I forgot.

M : Don't worry. I'll take them.

W : Hey, there's green tea on my desk. You should have some. It may help.

M : Well, I will have some when I get back.

W : All right, Tom. I'll see you later.

M : Okay. Bye.

M : Your grade will be based on attendance, participation, quizzes, exams, and a written report. I expect you to arrive on time. I understand that everyone may be late from time to time, but if you make a habit of being late, I will take off points. I expect everyone to fully participate and to pay attention in class. You will lose points for sleeping, talking on the phone, and not bringing your book.

Your two exams will be a midterm and a final. You will have a total of four quizzes: two before the midterm and two after the midterm. The report will be at least five pages long on a topic of your choice.

W : Concert Choice, may I help you?

M : Yes, I'd like two tickets for the African Jazz Concert in July.

W : Okay. Let me check.... Sir, there are only a few tickets left.

M : Really?

W : Yes, there are some seats on the second floor and some next to the stage.

M : How much are they?

W : The second floor seats are $40 and the seats next to the stage are $60.

M : Okay, then I'd like two tickets for the seats next to the stage.

W : How would you like to pay for your tickets, sir?

M : By credit card.

M : Good evening. How can I help you?

W : Hello. I can't turn on the TV.

M : Have you followed the instructions on the card?

W : Card? What card?

M : There should be a card on top of the TV set. It has instructions on how to operate the TV and select m ovies.

W : There's no card in this room. Nothing on the TV, anyway.

M : Oh, I'm terribly sorry, m a'am . W e'll send som eone to your room right aw ay.

W : Hi, Tony. How are you?

M : Fine, Nicole. Sorry to keep you waiting. Sit here. So, are you getting ready for summer?

W : I just went shopping and bought some summer clothes and sandals. Now, I want to change my look. I want you to cut my hair short.

M : Well, short hair is in this year.

W : I haven't had it short since I was in high school.

M : I think it'll be a good change.

W : I might as well change my color, too.

M : What color are you thinking about?

W : Well, I've always dreamed about being a blonde.

M : Oh, that's a good choice, Nicole. And if you don't like it, we can always try a different color.

(10)

W : Hi, Greg. How's it going?

M : Hi, Jenny. I was just going to call you.

W : Why? Anything wrong?

M : No, not really. I just wanted to ask you a big favor.

W : What's up?

M : W ell, I was wondering if I could borrow your car tomorrow afternoon. A friend of mine is having an art exhibition.

W : Uh..., why don't you just take the subway? It's faster.

M : I know. But there's no subway station near the gallery, and besides I have a bouquet of flowers and a gift to carry.

W : Well, I'd really like to help you out, but tomorrow I'm driving my parents to the airport. Otherwise, you could use it.

M : Well, thanks, anyway.

(11)

M : Hey, Mom, let's go to a movie.

W : Honey, we don't have time today. Today's your cousin Danny's birthday, remember?

M : What time is the party?

W : We have to be there at four thirty.

M : Danny lives close to the cinema. We can see a movie on our way to the party.

W : Oh, let's go tomorrow.

M : Come on, Mom. I already checked the movie times. Here. Look!

W : Well, if we leave now, we can get to the cinema around quarter after one. But it's getting a bit late.

M : Come on, Mom, please....

W : Well, let me take a look. Oh, there is one movie we can watch without missing the beginning.

M : Okay. Then let's see that one.

(12)

W : You must be pretty happy, Jonathan.

M : Sure. I feel like I'm on top of the world.

W : Honestly, I was surprised you won the first prize in the Korean Poetry Writing Contest.

M : So was I.

W : So, what did you do with the prize money?

M : Well, I put some in the bank. And I bought some new poetry books for myself.

W : You should also buy something for your parents, I suppose.

M : I already did.

W : Oh, you're such a good boy!

M : But..., I'm wondering about how to spend the rest of the money.

W : Why don't you give some to charity?

M : Oh, that's a good idea. I never thought about that.

(13)

W : Slow down! You're going to get a ticket.

M : Don't worry. I haven't seen any police all day.

W : Traffic is really heavy today.

M : Yeah, Mondays are always like that.

W : I told you we should have gotten the car checked before we left.

M : You're right. We should have.

W : So, which car do you want to get?

M : I like the red sports car next to the building.

W : Why's it so hot in your car?

M : The air conditioner is broken.

(14)

M : Hi, Debbie. You look great today. Why are you so dressed up?

W : Oh, I just got back from a wedding.

M : Really? Who got married?

W : Do you remember Maria from high school?

M : Well, I know two Marias from high school. Which one are you talking about?

W : Do you remember the one who was really thin and quiet?

M : You mean the one who played in the band?

W : Well, I haven't been sleeping well lately, Tom.

M : Are you worried about something?

W : Actually yes. My work is really stressful these days.
