What could be wrong with the compliment “I’m so proud of you”? Plenty. Just as it is misguided offer your child false praise, it is also a mistake to reward all of his accomplishments. Although rewards sound so positive, they can often lead to negative consequences. It is because they can take away from the love of learning. If you consistently reward a child for her

accomplishments, she starts to focus more on getting the reward than on that she did to earn it. The focus of her excitement shifts from enjoying learning itself to pleasing you. If you applaud every time your child identifies a letter, she may become a praise lover who eventually become less interested in learning the alphabet for its own sake than for hearing you applaud.

3. (A), (B), (C)의 각 네모 안에서 어법에 맞는 표현으로 가장 적 절한 것은?

Erin Taylor reminded me of a grandmother in a baked- goods commercial, with rounded features and white hair in a bun. Only after our interview did I learn (A) [that / what] this contented and still active eighty-nine-year-old grew up in poverty and suffered the loss of her husband and one of her children. What’s more surprising is that she occasionally experiences severe pain from arthritis these days. Erin, nevertheless, had a peaceful, strong serenity about her, combined with considerable wit.

When (B) [asking / asked] about her most important lesson for younger people, she didn’t hesitate: “In my eighty-nine years, I’ve learned that happiness is a choice

― not a condition.” And it felt to me like a “eureka!”

moment. I pressed Erin to describe this idea for me. She explained that if one lives a fulfilling life and always (C) [to try / tries] to look on the bright side, then happiness must follow.
