16. 다음 글에 나타난 Paul의 심정으로 가장 적절한 것은?
Paul touched his arms and legs. He felt amazing. He walked in a circle. He jumped. All his aches and pains were gone. In the last ten years, he had forgotten what it was like to walk without pain or to sit without struggling to find comfort for his lower back. Now he was able to move and bend easily. In fact, he could bring his knees up to his chest. He couldn’t contain his excitement. He ran around the room like a child who had too much sugar. He jumped on the sofa. Ha-ha! He had not truly run for so long, but he was running with joy now like the running boy of his youth.

As a small example of limiting choice to benefit myself in the end, I often let someone else choose my meal for me when I go out for dinner. Anyone who knows me knows that as long as the meal has lots of protein, I’m happy. Not only do I not have to stress over the menu, but it’s quite exciting not knowing what someone will order for me. Now, this works for me, but it would be tricky for us all to do this and some people might not like the added pressure of choosing someone else’s dinner as well as their own. But I think a happiness-improving strategy could appear as we each choose different degrees of control over different decisions.

As a child educator interested in supporting children’s development, you could draw on your past experiences with children, advice provided by colleagues, and your intuition about what is best. However, these sources are not sufficient to help you develop a truly professional reaction to many situations. For that, you will need a greater collection of knowledge and skills than those based solely on life experience. Although some child educators have previous experiences that enhance their ability to guide children’s development, that background must be supported by additional knowledge and skills to make the journey from amateur to professional.

Deciding to begin an exercise program and starting to exercise are not easy, but developing a habit of physical activity that lasts for more than 6 months may be even harder. People are more likely to continue exercising if they find value in their exercise goals. If people began exercising to help with a specific health or fitness goal, and they continue to value that goal, they will be motivated by progress toward that goal. Even if people do not necessarily enjoy physical activity, when they find that it is helping them reach an important goal, physical activity can become an integrated part of their regular habits.

Most musicians and scholars who address the nature of musical experience believe that the ability to experience music is so widespread that it must be considered an inborn capacity for all humans. That is, people are born with the potential to listen and respond to sound, as well as to create and use it. Although the value and significance of the musical experience differs by culture and individual preference, like language it is thought to be a part of all human societies throughout recorded history. The musical experience is a phenomenon of human proportion, throughout our history and throughout our lives.

Some people love familiarity; some love the unfamiliar.
I’m definitely in the familiarity camp. I ① like returning to places I’ve visited before. Other people enjoy doing new things. For familiarity lovers, a habit becomes ② easier as it becomes familiar. When I started blogging, my unfamiliarity with the mechanics of posting made me ③ dread it. But I forced myself to post every day so that the foreign became familiar. Lovers of the unfamiliar may prefer routines that seem ④ less habit-like. A guy told me, “I am bored when I see the same faces all the time, so once a week I work in a different regional office, to shake things up.” In fact, lovers of the unfamiliar may do better with a series of ⑤ long-term activities instead of trying to create an enduring habit.

Perception is selective. That is, different individuals might perceive the same message differently, or selectively. This might lead to the conclusion that there is nothing we can do to affect perception. This is very far from the truth because the more we understand about the perceptual process, the more we can ensure that intended receivers of the message will interpret our message in the way we desire. If the sender understands the receiver’s frame of mind and expresses the message in terms that mean the same to both sender and receiver, the chance of effective communication increases. The receiver will then perceive

Anticipated satisfaction is related to the concept of satisfaction. Consider, for example, a consumer who is deciding between two brands of mobile phone. One has the latest digital camera; the other has a low price. When this consumer approaches this decision with a view to develop anticipated satisfaction, he or she is likely to pay more attention to vivid attributes which are easy to visualize and easily construct imagined experiences (in this case, the digital camera) than to less vivid attributes (in this case, the price). Therefore, the consumer is more likely to choose the mobile phone with the camera. Thus, anticipated satisfaction is not related to the actual performance or use of the product but rather to about how the product will function.
① public opinion
② professional judgment
③ manufacturers’ concerns
④ sellers’ guided information
⑤ consumers’ imagined ideas

What makes watercolor such a challenging medium is its unpredictable nature. Watercolor has a tendency to shift as it is absorbed into the paper. The absorbent quality of the paper also makes it difficult to cover up a mistake. Because watercolor paint is generally clear, mistakes tend to show through even after more layers are added. (A) , it is possible to lighten or even remove some colors by wetting them with a clean brush dipped in water and then gently pressing the area.
Although challenging, once mastered, watercolor allows the artist to produce effects that simply are not possible with other mediums. (B) , a skilled artist can make layers of paint with varying strengths of color and allow the colors from the previous layers to shine through.

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was signed by the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 1994, creating a free trade zone across the continent. ① It has mostly had a positive impact, promoting economic growth in all three countries, but it has created some problems as well. ② The trade in powdered milk, also called non-fat dry milk, is one example. ③ Powdered milk was first developed in the 19th century and became a valuable product because it keeps for longer and is easier to transport than liquid milk. ④ The percentage of fat in milk is dependent on the type of cow, quality of animal feed, and farm conditions. ⑤ But the removal of trade restrictions under NAFTA led to the dumping of American powdered milk in Mexico, driving many Mexican milk producers out of business.

The common belief that cold or changing weather causes illness is perhaps the mother of all myths. Not only is this cross-cultural, but it’s cross-generational as well.
(A) This association between catching colds and cold weather has more to do with seasonal human behavior. During the winter, people tend to gather in indoor environments more than they do during the warmer months.
(B) As people crowd close together, they are more likely to spread infections to one another. This hypothesis has not been supported by strong scientific evidence, but it does make intuitive sense.
(C) Even well-educated people buy into this myth. Virtually everyone believes that you can get a cold by being exposed to cold weather or changing temperatures.

When I buy something, I’m almost always given a paper receipt. I’m so frustrated because my house is filled with receipts! I don’t think we really need paper receipts.

David : I don’t think it is desirable for people to cut down more and more trees to make paper for receipts. I feel bad every time I’m handed a paper receipt.
Frank : I’m not good at using electronic devices to manage my spending. So I need paper receipts to keep track of what I’ve spent my money on.

The free-rider effect occurs when some other member of a group can and will provide what is needed, thus making one’s own contribution to the group unnecessary.
In other words, an individual group member may not make effort because he or she does not perceive a need to do so.
Filling out one copy of a worksheet is an example of cooperative learning practices that invite free riding. A series of experiments demonstrated that different group members made effort or free rode under different task conditions. When the group’s evaluation depended on the highest score, high ability members worked harder; when the lowest score defined the group’s evaluation, low ability members worked harder. Thus, both high and low ability members would free ride under certain conditions, even when their efforts were identifiable.
A person tends to become a free-rider under certain conditions in which he doesn’t feel the need to .
① relax ② withdraw
③ hesitate ④ contribute
⑤ discriminate
[33~34] 다음 글을 읽고, 물음에 답하시오.
(A) I can well remember my first impression of Larry I taught a year ago. He was a quiet student who never looked anyone directly in the eye and never spoke unless spoken to. It became immediately obvious what Larry’s problem was. One day his mother stopped by and told me that her son was not very smart.
(B) After a few months Larry’s personality began to change.
He began to smile and participate in class activities. He began to believe in himself. With every new word of praise, his performance improved. Before long he was boldly telling people that he was “one of Mr. Baker’s best students.”
(C) When I listened to what she said, I made no comment myself and privately made up my mind to prove that Larry was smarter than his mother thought. To his family and himself he was a failure. What I had to do now was allow him to be a success.
(D) So I slowly began to work on Larry. At first he didn’t want to do anything. But I kept making him do his work as best he could, and then I would pick something out to praise. Sometimes I had to look pretty hard to find something, but I praised him over and over. I told him that I was very lucky to have him in my class.

Here’s why gifted communicators keep a close eye on safety. Dialog calls for the free flow of meaning. And nothing kills the flow of meaning like fear. When you are afraid that people aren’t buying into your ideas, you start pushing too hard. When you feel that you may be harmed in some way, you start withdrawing and hiding. Both these reactions ― to fight and to take flight ― are motivated by the same emotion: fear. On the other hand, if you believe that you are safe enough, you can talk about almost anything and people will listen. If you are unafraid that you’re being attacked, you yourself can hear almost anything and not become defensive.
In order to freely express your ideas and listen to others, you shouldn’t have any .

Health Tip of the Week
Do you know how many health benefits bananas have? Above all, bananas are a good source of fiber.
And they are useful for weight loss as one banana has only about 90 calories. Moreover, they help to relieve stress and lower risk of heart disease. For these reasons a lot of people consider bananas one of the best fruits for their health. Remember! A banana a day keeps the doctor away!
Learning Diary
Today my teacher gave me three suggestions on how I can explore science-related careers. The first suggestion was getting information on them. Then, I need to go to the library to find some books and magazines about science-related topics. My teacher also suggested meeting professionals in the field. So, I’m going to visit a science center. There I can meet professional scientists and talk with them about what I need to prepare to become a scientist. Finally, the last suggestion was to have hands-on experiences. I believe that participating in a science camp might be a good chance to have such experiences, like conducting experiments. And I heard a nearby university will offer a camp this summer. So, I’m planning to participate in the science camp. I’m really looking forward to it.
