Analysis of Western-Korean cooperative treatment in hospital-care of patients with dementia

[Abstract]
Objectives : Thepurposeofthisstudyistoprovidedatatoguidedementiahealth-carepolicy inKoreaandtoestablishthepositionofKoreanmedicalspecialistsinlong-termcarehospitals byanalyzingthedataofdementiainpatients.Weanalyzedtheactualconditionofdementia patientsincarehospitalandtheeffectofWestern-Koreancooperativemedicineonthe progressofdementia.
Methods : FromJanuary1,2016toDecember31,2016,inpatientswhowerediagnosedwithde- mentiaatMungyeongmunicipallong-termcarehospitalandadmittedformorethan3months wereenrolled.Theirmedicalrecordsandsimpletestswereanalyzedretrospectively.
Results : Weexaminedthedetaileddiagnosis,includingbothmainandsubdiagnosis,and Alzheimerdiseasedementia,at97%,wasthemostcommon.Atthetimeofadmission,Korean VersionoftheMini-MentalStateExam(K-MMSE)analysisshowedthatseveredementiaaf- fected52%,andmostwereratedasGeriatricDepressionScale(GDS)6.Basedontheadmis- siondate,theresultsofasimplifiedtestappliedtothedementiapatientsevery6months showedanmaintainintheK-MMSEandGDSscoresin83%.
Conclusion : Theresultsofthisstudyshowthattherateofprogressionofdementiaissomewhat lowerininpatientswithmoderatetosevereAlzheimer'swhohavereceivedWestern-Korean cooperativetreatment.However,duetoinstitutionallimitations,long-terminpatientssuchas thosewithdementiadonotreceiveactivetraditionalKoreanmedicaltreatment;hence,itis necessarytoimprovethenationalinstitutionoftraditionalKoreanmedicineinlong-termcare hospitals.
