The Ministry of Justice would like to thank you for your continued support and cooperation in the immigration policy affairs.
Until now, to ease congestion at the offices and to alleviate inconvenience of having to reissue passports, our Ministry has been granting period of stay extensions for foreigners regardless of their passport validity.
However, there have been difficulties in identifying the accurate immigration status in Korea because many foreigners failed to report passport changes, thus violating the Immigration Act.
Starting from July 1, 2021, period of stay extension will be limited to only be granted once for until the passport expiration date.
ex. Even if a person is eligible for a 2-year extension according to regulations, if that person’s passport is valid for six months, the period of stay shall be extended by only six months.
In this regard, to avoid inconveniences, please inform this to foreigners who will be entering Korea.
