<제16회 국제동양의학 학술대회> - 대통령 축하메시지
제16회 국제동양의학 학술대회 개최를 진심으로 축하합니다. 국내는 물론 세계 50여 나라에서 참 가하신 내외귀빈 여러분을 기쁜 마음으로 환영합니다. 대회 준비에 애쓰신 대한한의사협회와 국 제동양의학회에도 감사 인사를 드립니다.
First of all, I would like to congratulate you on the 16th International Congress on Oriental Medicine. My heartfelt welcome to distinguished guests from approximately 50 countries. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Association of Korean Medicine and the International Society of Oriental Medicine for your hard work for preparing for this event.
“건강을 잃으면 모든 것을 잃는다.”는 말처럼, 개인이 자아를 실현하고 사회의 발전에 기여하기 위해서는 건강한 신체와 정신이 뒷받침되어야 합니다. 이처럼 건강은 인간의 삶에서 가장 소중한 것이자 행복한 사회의 초석이라 하겠습니다.
There is a saying that goes, ‘if you lose health, you lose everything.’ Likewise, healthy body and mind is essential to one’s developing themselves and contributing to societal development. We can say that health is the most precious thing in human lives and the part and parcel of a happy society.
최근 의학기술의 눈부신 발전과 삶의 질 향상으로 그동안 꿈으로만 여겼던 ‘100세 시대’를 눈앞에 두고 있습니다. 더욱 늘어난 삶을 누릴 수 있게 된 것은 큰 행복이자 축복입니다.
Thanks to the phenomenal development of medicine and the improved quality of life, we are about to enter an era of centenarian, long regarded as a dream. Longevity is a happiness cum blessing.
하지만 만성질환의 증가, 노인요양과 복지비용의 증가 같은 고령화에 따른 문제점도 늘고 있는 게 사실입니다. 머지않아 닥쳐올 100세 시대에 대비하여 사전에 질병을 예방하고 스스로 관리할 수 있도록, 보건의료의 패러다임을 새롭게 구축해 나가는 지혜가 필요한 때입니다.
However, it is also true that problems arising from aging population such as increasing chronic diseases, and mounting cost of welfare and care for the elderly are worsening. Sooner rather than later, we will face the age of centenarian, which means that we should change the paradigm of health and care so that we can prevent and manage diseases.

이런 점에서 개별 질병의 치료를 넘어 전인적 관점에서 사람을 살피고 치유하는 전통의학의 장점 이 새롭게 주목받고 있습니다.
In this regard, the beauty of alternative medicine, which is to treat and cure patients from a holistic viewpoint rather than treating the disease itself is attracting renewed attention.
정부도 우리나라 전통의학인 한의학의 뛰어난 치료효과와 높은 발전 가능성에 큰 기대를 걸고 있 습니다.
The Korean government is also placing high hopes on the highly effective treatment and possibility of development of the Korean traditional medicine.
이에 따라 한의학이 세계 전통의학 발전을 선도하고 인류의 건강증진에 더욱 이바지할 수 있도록, 정부는 ‘한의약의 과학화·산업화·세계화’ 정책을 추진하고 있습니다.
The Korean traditional medicine should lead the alternative medicine of the world and contribute to promoting the health of the humanity. The government is helping to make it happen through
‘scientification, industrialization and globalization’ of the Korean medicine.
또한 세계 전통의학의 우수성을 더욱 널리 알리고 발전시키는 계기를 마련하고자 내년에는 세계 전통의약 엑스포를 개최할 예정입니다.
Also, in an effort to publicize and promote the strength of the alternative medicine of the world, the government is planning to hold an expo on the alternative medicine of the world.
이와 함께 전통의학의 글로벌 경쟁력을 한 차원 높이자면 전통의학의 경험을 현대적으로 재해석 하고 과학적 근거를 확립하는 데 계속 힘써야 하겠습니다.
If we are to upgrade the global competitiveness of the alternative medicine, we should try to establish a scientific evidence of the effectiveness of the alternative medicine. 현대적으로 해석한 다는 말은 현대의학의 관점에서 과학적으로 그 효능을 증명한다는 뜻이므로 구태여 번역 할 필요 는 없다.
그런 의미에서 이번 학술대회의 주제로 ‘의학의 미래, 전통의학’을 선정한 것은 매우 시의적절하 다고 생각합니다. 오늘 전통의학 분야의 세계적인 전문가들이 한 자리에 모여 활발히 대화를 나 누고 연구 성과를 공유함으로써, 전통의학의 가치가 한층 높아지게 될 것으로 믿습니다.
In that regard, it is opportune that we have decided on the ‘future of medicine, the alternative medicine’ as the theme for this Congress. World class experts on alternative medicine have

gathered here today to share research results. It will help us appreciate the value of alternative medicine more.
인류의 건강 증진을 위해 헌신해 온 여러분의 노고에 감사드리며, 다시 한 번 국제동양의학 학술 대회 개최를 축하드립니다.
I would like to thank you for your sustained efforts for the promotion of human health. Once again my profound congratulations on the holding of the Congress.
회의가 끝나시면 아름다운 한국 가을의 정취도 한껏 즐기시고, 5천년 역사가 남긴 유서 깊은 유적 도 돌아보며 마음에 남는 추억을 안고 돌아가시기 바랍니다. 고맙습니다.

Hello. I am Jong Deuk Kim, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism. I would like to congratulate you on holding the 6th Korea Medical Tourism Forum. I would like to extend my thanks to assemblyman Jang Sil Kim, who has made this forum possible to revitalize Korea’s medical tourism, an industry with high added value, chairman Young Hoon Shin of the Association of Korea Medical Tourism, and distinguished guests from home and abroad.
세계 의료관광 시장은 국민 소득 증대, 기대 수명 증가와 교통수단의 발달로 급성장하고 있으며, 질병 치료에서 예방적 건강관리와 여성들의 아름다움(美) 추구, 치유와 휴양의 웰니스(wellness) 관광 등 새로운 의료관광으로 빠르게 진화해나가고 있습니다.
The medical tourism market of the world is developing rapidly thanks to an increased per capita income, extended life expectancy and development of means of transportation. The market is fast shifting its focus from treatment of disease to preventive care, cosmetic surgery and wellness tourism.
