Measurement of g Using a Magnetic Pendulum and Flashing LED

A simple pendulum and a free-fall experiment have been used to extract the acceleration due to gravity, g, in a school physics laboratory. High-tech versions of these experiments are usually done by using an angular motion sensor and a photo gate connected to a computer that collect data and display the results graphically. Although the results are good, the emphasis on the computer’s ability to collect and analyze data leaves little analysis for the students to perform. In this paper, we introduce a measurement of g using a magnetic pendulum and flashing LED; the measurement procedure and equipment are suitable for high school student to get a acceptable g value in a physics laboratory. These experiments were performed by 3th grade middle school students who attended a Science-gifted Education Center in our university, and a value of g with an accuracy of less than 1 % was obtained.
