R&D Trend and Prospect of Petroleum Development Technology

Abstract :This paper reviews the history of petroleum development and the trend of R&D in order to predict the desirable research direction in Korea. Starting with the establishment of the Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC), initial R&D was focused mainly on offshore exploration and the government support was vulnerable to the fluctuating oil price. The unfavorable condition caused by the IMF crisis continued until the oil price jump in 2004. Korea became a petroleum producing country since the production from the Donghae-1 gas field which was found by our own technology. The R&D environment was quickly recovered after the launch of the large scale projects such as energy technology innovation project and The Korea energy and mineral resources engineering program. R&D on self-reliance of petroleum development technology and unconventional resources was started successfully. Recent research is focused on practical research topics linked with overseas projects.

In order to enhance our capability of petroleum development technology, we need to promote internationally competitive original technology and service companies as well as capacity building of operatorship.
