A striking difference in basement lithology between the North and the South Han River basins provides a good example for investigating the impact of weathering processes and the influence of rock types on river water chemistry. Comprehensive data sets of chemical and isotopic compositions, and weathering fluxes have been collected from the Han River and these data were compared with those of world's major rivers. These observations suggest that there is a strong influence of prevailing rock types in their drainage basins and a minor effect of dams on the chemical and isotopic compositions of the river waters.
