Talk about young people who pursue careers as flight attendants.
항공사 승무원 진로를 지망하는 젊은이들에 대해 이야기해 주세요.

There are many aspiring flight attendants in Korea. Since most flight attendants are women, far more women pursue this career. Large crowds gather at job fairs for flight attendants. These days, international travel is much more approachable, and there are countless low-cost carriers. The number of flight attendant hires has increased dramatically. The pay is above average, and there is the special perk of traveling to various places. As a result, the flight attendant field is one in which competition is fierce. Many colleges have departments for flight attendants, and there are private training schools. Languages skills are among the basic skills to become a flight attendant, so applicants focus on this as well. These days, there are many cases of being employed by foreign airlines in addition to domestic airlines.

한국에는 항공사 승무원 지방생들이 매우 많다. 항공사 승무원 대다수가 여성이다 보니, 자연스럽게 이쪽으로 진 로를 모색하는 사람은 여성이 훨씬 많다. 항공사 승무원 취업 박람회에는 참석자가 인산인해를 이룬다. 요즘은 해 외 여행의 접근성이 좋아지고, 저가 항공사들이 많이 생겨나서, 승무원 채용 인원도 부쩍 늘어났다. 보수도 평균 이상이고 여러 곳을 여행할 수 있다는 특전도 있다. 그러한 탓에 항공사 승무원 분야는 경쟁이 치열한 분야 중 하 나다. 승무원 전공 학과가 있는 대학도 여러 개 있고, 승무원 양성 사설 학원도 있다. 항공사 승무원 기본 능력 중 하나가 어학 실력이므로, 지원자가 여기에도 신경을 쓰고 있다. 요즘은 국내 항공사뿐만 아니라 외국계 항공사에 취업하는 사례도 부쩍 늘고 있다.

flight attendant 항공사 승무원
요즘은 -ess라는 접미사를 사용해서 여성을 나타내는 것을 피하는 추세다. 문화권에 따라 차이가 있지만 actor, waiter 등의 말 대신 actress, waitress 등을 사용하면 다소 구시대적인 사람 취급을 받을 수도 있다. 따라서 stewardess, steward라는 표현은 잘 사용하지 않고, 대신 중성적인 flight attendant라는 말을 사용하는 것이 적절하다.
예) The flight attendants were all very friendly. (항공사 승무원들이 모두 아주 친절했다.) I asked the flight attendant for a blanket. (나는 항공사 승무원에게 담요를 달라고 부탁했다.)
