Over the last decade, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) signals from mineral quartz has been widely used as a robust tool for estimating the depositional ages of Quaternary sedi- ments from various geological environments, especially when there is a lack of materials suit- able for conventional dating methods. It has been known that the OSL signal from quartz is composed of several luminescence components with different sensitivity to stimulation light (Jain et al., 2003); these components are called the "fast", "medium", "slow 1", "slow 2" components etc, according to their bleaching rates. Of these components, the most light-sensitive luminescence component, the fast component, is usually used for OSL dating, and it was reported that quartz samples, luminescence signal of which is dominated by the fast OSL component (> 90% of the total OSL signal), are the most desirable ones for OSL dating (Choi et al., in press). However, quartz grains from a palaeo-beach sediments from Jeju Island, Korea (Jaguri Formation) were observed to have OSL signals dominated by non-fast components, and showed a lot of offending luminescence characteristics in terms of dating purpose. In this paper, we describe various luminescence characteristics of quartz from Jaguri Formation, and investigate the possibility of stripping out the fast component only from OSL signal dominated by non-fast components using LM-OSL (Linearly Modulated-OSL) technique that has previously been introduced by Bulur (1996). The sepa- rated fast component is then applied to a SAR (Single-Aliquot Regenerative-Dose) procedure for equivalent dose estimation of quartz from Jaguri Formation.
