- About the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) -
As an affiliated institute of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development, the NIIED is a Korean government agency created for the purpose of educating overseas Koreans and promoting international education and cooperation. The NIIED launched in 1962 as the Student Advising Institute of Seoul National University, an organization based on the instruction for overseas Koreans. The centre was re-established as the NIIED in 1992. To improve administrative services, in 2001 the NIIED was designated as an executive agency for education of overseas Koreans, international cooperation and educational exchanges.
Teachers are experts in Korean Language, history and culture who teach in NIIED. They have been teaching overseas Koreans for many years. And they can also speak Korean as well as several foreign language such as Japanese, Chinese, English, Russian etc. Of course teachers are always counselling so many students, too.

Long Term Course (University/ Graduate school Preparatory)
Goal :Provide systematic instruction in the Korean language so that students may study at the
university/graduate level in Korea. Furthermore, it aims to support students in discovering their identity and self- confidence through cultural excursions and studying Korean history and culture.
Eligibility
Overseas Koreans who have completed the equivalent of Korean Elementary, Junior High and High school and have been approved by the Korean Consulate abroad.
Applicants from non-Korean families can apply as auditors.

Goal :Instill a sense of pride and develop a basic understanding of Korea in such aspects as Korean culture, language and history while providing opportunities of field excursions.

After examination of the submitted application at the Korean consulate abroad an interview is held to judge eligibility and a recommendation is made.
The president of the NIIED makes a selection of the consideration of the candidates recommended by the consulate abroad and forwards a list to the consulates.
Information Regarding Registration and Admission
Registration: Those who are accepted must make a lump-sum payment to cover tuition, room and board expenses within the registration period.
Registration period: 2007. 3. 26-3. 30, Daily 09:30~18:00 (Period 2 short term course registration is 2007. 8. 28- 8. 30)
Entrance Ceremony : 2007. 4. 2. 10:00. NIIED Grand Lecture Hall. Long and short term program ceremonies combined.

Benefits
Scholarship:
Type : Curricular scholarship, Labor service scholarship, Dormitory model student scholarship, Shinhan Bank scholarship(only for Korean Japanese students in Japan)
Amount: Long term 4 payments of 500,000 won each. Short term 1 payments of 400,000 won each term Standards for selection: Marks academic performance and active participation attained during the study period, consideration of financial status
Auditors are not qualified for scholarships.
Dormitory:
Overseas Korean students accepted to the program are required to live in the dormitory. Those who out of necessity must live outside the facility must obtain special permission from the president of the NIIED.
As a modern structure fully equipped with air conditioning, cafeteria, exercise room, seminar room, and laundry facilities the dormitory is comfortably outfitted, with a capacity of 240 students.

Other:
Through completion of NIIED course work, assuming compliance with terms relating to admittance of foreign and overseas Koreans, students can apply to undergraduate and graduate programs in Korea. Yearly approximately 90 students who complete the NIIED program are accepted at such prestigious schools as Seoul National University, Yonsei University and Korea University
Seasonal Courses:
Program Goal: Making use of vacation time in country of residence, the course provides an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in Korean culture, language and history while exploring their roots through field excursions and opportunities to see the true nature of Korea.
Curriculum
Basic course work : Korean language, history, group discussions, guest lecturers, presentations, etc.
Cultural Excursions : Historic remains, cultural excursion, city sight seeing, visits to universities, etc.
Special activities : Ceremonial events, opportunities to make friends, cooking activities, plays, etc.
