ZSM-5 was successfully synthesized from natural starting materials, siliceous mudstone which major compositions are 85.85 wt.% SiO2 and 6.99 wt.% of Al2O3, by hydrothermal method. Siliceous mudstone, which having averageparticle size of 2 m, was used to synthesize ZSM-5. The ZSM-5 crystallization was strongly affected by molar ratio between SiO2 and Al2O3, which was controlled from 25 to 35.4 by addition of different amounts of sodium silicate. The syntheses were conducted with variations of the reaction temperature from 130 to200oC and the reaction time from 4 to 40 hours.
Tetrapropyl ammonium bromide was used as template. ZSM-5 products were analyzed by XRD, SEM and BET specific surface area measurements. The experiments were carried out in the optimum synthetic condition at molar ratio 3.3Na2O_31SiO2_Al2O3_1040H2O_1.2(TPABr) and 170oC of reaction temperature. The analytical results showed ZSM-5 product has 324 m2/g specific surface area and sphere-type morphologies.
