Secondary Students’ Misconceptions about Magnetic Fields and Magnetic Materials

The aim of this study was to study students’ misconception about magnetic fields and magnetic materials. The subject were 221 6th, 8th, and 10th graders in the Chungbuk area of Korea. The categories for the students’ concepts were the polarity of a magnet, the field near the center of a bar magnet, magnetic materials, and the interaction between a magnet and an electric charge.

The result showed that the students did not have a good enough understanding in magnetic dipole and magnetization. Many of them easily accepted the conception of magnetic monopole in a bar magnet. Also, they had various misconceptions about the magnetic field near the center of a bar magnet, and even showed that electric charge could interact with a magnet.
