Case Study about High School Physics Teachers’ Implementation of the 2009 Revised National Curriculum

The factors that could affect a teacher’s first implementation of the 2009 revised national cur- riculum were analyzed by investigating one teacher’s implementation of that curriculum. That teacher implemented the newly revised curriculum in 2012 for the first time. To analyze the im- plementation of curriculum, we analyzed the teacher’s journals and interviews with an expert in teaching “Space-time and the Universe” according to various factors. The teacher made 28 journals and had 17 interviews with a physics education expert to reflect on his teaching. The expert just facilitated the reflection of the teacher on his teaching through interviews and journals, so that the teacher could improve his lessons based on the reflection. The journal and the interviews were analyzed according to five factors: curriculum, textbook, teacher, student, and environment. The implementation of the past national curriculum and the textbook for the current curriculum mainly affected interpretation of the current curriculum. Limited time on a physics teaching, the university entrance exam, and the novel recognition about students’ learning of Einstein’s theory of relativity were burdens for implementation of the curriculum.
