Backgrounds: Burn patients with or without inhalation injury commonly manifest an inflam- matory process involving the entire organism. The circulatory manifestation of the systemic inflammatory response largely disappear within 24 h, but the patient remain in a hypermetabolic state until wound coverage is achieved, so the patient may progress to multi organ dysfunction syndrome, or multi organ failure state. The main purpose of this study was to describe the relationship between the SIRS of acute phase and the prognosis in burn patients.
Methods: We retrospectively analysed 110 burn patients who visited Soonhwa Hospital between Octorber 2001 and March 2002. The patients were divided according to whether SIRS is positive or not, and compared to hospital day, and mortality.
Results: The patients who were SIRS positive within 24 h have longer hospital day, and higher mortality (p<0.05). And the patients who were SIRS positive within 48 h have higher mortality (p<0.05), but there is no difference in hospital day.
Conclusions: SIRS positive within 24 h after burn injury may be helpful determinant to predict the prognosis of burn patient.
