M: Susan, look outside. The rain is pouring hard.

W: Oh, my! I should walk to the post office now, but I don’t have an umbrella.

M: I have one here. Do you want me to lend you mine?

W: __________________________________________________________

W: Honey, you said you have a day off this Friday, right?

M: Yeah, it’s my company’s foundation day. How about going on a family outing to the zoo?

W: That sounds great. Jane wants to go to the zoo these days.

M: __________________________________________________________

M: Excuse me, I ordered an americano, but this is a latte.

W: Didn’t you order a latte with chocolate syrup?

M: Definitely not. My receipt here also says so.

W: __________________________________________________________

W: Hello, I’m Carol Casey, owner of Carol’s Restaurant. Today, I’ll talk about customers who make reservations but never show up. These no-show customers actually hurt the business’ profits, so I’d like to give you some tips to minimize no-shows. First, send a text message the day before. It can help remind customers of their reservations. Second, offer a reward like free beverages or discounts to customers who keep their reservations.

Lastly, ask for a deposit. If they don’t show up, the deposit would belong to the restaurant. Thank you for listening.

M: Attention, all hospital staff, patients, and visitors at Pacific Hospital! I’d like to inform you of an earthquake drill scheduled today at 2 p.m. The drill will begin with a siren through the hospital broadcasting system to announce the presence of an ongoing earthquake. All hospital staff, patients, and visitors need to respond with the “duck, cover, and hold”

technique. Medical procedures will be stopped temporarily except for emergency cases. The drill will be conducted for 20 minutes. For further information on the earthquake drill, please call the Safety Office at 1539.

Thank you.

M: Hi, Judy. You look upset.

W: Well, there were some people at the theater with bad manners. I couldn’t enjoy the movie because of them.

M: Let me guess. They used their cell phones during the movie, right?

W: No, about 20 minutes after the movie started, three people came in. Of course, my seat was right behind theirs.

M: Oh, that’s some bad luck.

W: I was so distracted as they stumbled their way in and seated themselves.

M: Umm... honestly, I’m late sometimes. You know, that could happen.

W: People should take seats before a movie starts. Think about the inconveniences other people would have to endure.

M: That makes sense. I would have been irritated, too.

W: It’s public etiquette to take a seat before the movie starts.

(4)

M: Hi, Janice, what’s going on?

W: Hi, Dad. I’m trying to memorize these words for the quiz tomorrow.

M: Are you? But I see the television is on.

W: My favorite boy band is performing on the music show now.

M: Well, doesn’t watching TV while studying disrupt your concentration?

W: Maybe a little, but I can’t miss the show.

M: If I were you, I’d watch the show first and then study.

W: But then I won’t have enough time to prepare for the quiz.

M: I understand, but doing several things at the same time isn’t actually getting you anywhere.

W: Yeah, I guess you’re right.

M: Doing one thing at a time is usually more efficient. Trust me.

W: Okay. I’ll get to work on the quiz right after the show is finished.

M: Susan, can we talk about this order?

W: Sure, John. What’s up?

M: Well, the customer wants to have lobster with ginger and spring onions.

W: Okay, that’s today’s special.

M: Yeah, but the customer wants no sesame oil in the dish because she has a sesame allergy.

W: Okay. I think I can use olive oil instead of sesame oil. Please tell the customer.

M: Yes, I will. And I’m wondering if you’re ready with the dessert for table number five.

W: You mean the table that ordered four three-course meals?

M: Right. They are about to finish the main dish.

W: I’m almost ready. I just need to decorate the chocolate cakes with strawberries.

M: Okay. I’ll serve them as soon as you’re ready.

M: Number Three

W: Could you remove the stain on this shirt?

M: I’ll do my best, but I can’t guarantee how it’ll turn out.

M: Number Four

W: Hi, Jason. What’s up?

M: Mom, have you seen my folder?

M: My red folder. I thought I put the folder in my bag last night, but now I can’t find it. It has my book report.

W: You mean the report that you asked me to review last night?

M: Oh, no! I totally forgot about that. Is it still with you?

W: I put the report on your desk after I finished checking it.

M: Really? Then it must be there. I have to submit it to my teacher before three.

W: Well, I have a lunch appointment with my friends near your school today.

I’ll bring the book report on the way. How about 1:20 at the main gate?

M: That’d be great! Thank you, Mom.

W: No problem. See you soon.

(6)

W: Hey! The finals are finally over. What are you going to do with your free time?

M: Actually, I’m directing a play for the upcoming school festival. I’ve written it myself.

W: Wow! What is the play about?

M: It’ll be about some funny episodes of school life.

W: Sounds interesting. Tell me if I can help out with your play.

M: Thanks. Actually I need someone to work on the stage setting.

W: It’d be my pleasure. By the way, is there any way I can be on stage?

I don’t mind even a small role.

M: Well, right now, the only position available is for a boy.

W: I see. Then I guess I can’t be your actor this time.

M: I’m so sorry. But I’ll definitely let you know if I have an opening for a girl.

W: Thanks.

W: Welcome to Tech Electronics. How can I help you, sir?

M: Hello. I’m looking for an M303 printer. Do you have those in stock?

W: Yes, we do have that model.

M: May I ask how much it is? I know the list price is $ 300, but I heard I can buy one at a lower price here.

W: Exactly. We can give you a 10 percent discount off the list price.

M: Great, I’ll take it then. I also need some ink cartridges for the printer.

How much do they cost?

W: They are $ 10 each. How many do you need?

M: I’d like to buy two cartridges, please.

W: Okay. How would you like to pay?

M: Let me pay in cash.

W: Thank you very much.

W: Hey, Jimmy. Have you ever been to an author signing event?

M: No. Are there any such events soon?

W: Yes. Gray Bear Bookstore will hold a signing event this Sunday.

M: Who’s the author?

W: Cathy Ace. Visitors can get her autograph and also hear some readings.

M: Wow! I can’t wait to see her. What time does the event start?

W: From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

M: I see. We should get there as early as possible. Should I buy her book to get her autograph?

W: Her books will be available for purchase, but you don’t need to buy them.

M: Okay. I’ll bring my favorite book of hers. What about you?

W: I’ll buy one there. Customers can get five percent off on her latest books, and 10 percent off on her old ones.

M: Then I might buy some more of her books there.

W: Ladies and gentlemen, this is your head flight attendant Sarah Brown speaking. Welcome to Flight 107 bound for Seattle. 15

M: Honey, do you have time to look for our new television? I have a TV catalogue here.

W: Sure. Let’s take a look together.

M: Okay. Hmm... let me see. 60 inches seems too big for our living room.

W: Yeah. Also, let’s not spend more than $ 1,000.

M: Yeah, I agree.

W: How about the screen? Which one do you prefer, flat or curved?

M: I think a flat TV is better because the curved ones make me dizzy.

W: Okay, that just leaves us to choose about Internet connection options.

M: Do you really think we need to use the Internet through the TV?

W: I suppose not. We already have enough devices for Internet access at home.

M: I agree. Let’s buy this one without the Internet.

W: All right, I think we’ve made our decision then.

M: Okay. Can you tell me about your backpack?

W: It’s a medium-sized black leather backpack, and a small toy rabbit is attached to the side zipper.

M: I see. Please tell me what’s inside the backpack.

W: Well... two books, a cell phone charger, and a pair of glasses, I think.

M: Do you have any other valuables in there?

W: No, I don’t think so.

M: Okay, let me check the register. Can I put you on hold?

M: Grace, how was your job interview yesterday?

W: I think I did pretty well, but we’ll see. When is your interview?

W: I bet you can. Tell me how you have been preparing for the interview.

M: Well, for now I’m reading a book about successful interviews. It says many things I didn’t know.

W: Good. It’ll definitely help you.

M: And I’m going to rehearse before the real one.

W: That’s a good idea. Many people do that before the important interviews.

M: Yeah. Practicing with somebody can be a really big help.

W: Right. That way you’ll be more relaxed and confident.

M: That’s exactly what I need.

W: If you don’t have a partner, I can help you practice.

But this summer vacation, she is going to visit Korea for two weeks because her brother will get married and she has to join a research project in Korea. However, during that period, she doesn’t want her mail and other deliveries to pile up in her mailbox because people would notice the house is empty. Before Sumi leaves for Korea, she asks her friend James to pick up her mail and deliveries while she is away. In this situation, what would Sumi most likely say to James?

W: Hello, everyone. As the holiday seasons approach, there are many people who plan a trip abroad. My friend Lucy was also excited for her trip to Japan, but she was nervous because she doesn’t speak Japanese. That’s why I recommended iTRAVELBUDDY. For other travelers like Lucy with language difficulties, iTRAVELBUDDY is an app that translates over 20 languages, both in text and voice. Recently, iTRAVELBUDDY updated more languages such as Russian and Vietnamese so you have more options when traveling around the world. Another nice feature is its ability to slow down recorded audio to help you understand what you hear. So even though a friend you meet speaks Spanish too fast, the app can help you out. Also, the app saves translations so you don’t have to look up the same words or phrases more than once while traveling. When Lucy traveled to Japan with iTRAVELBUDDY, she had no trouble communicating. I hope you also enjoy your trip with iTRAVELBUDDY.
