Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana confirmed on Wednesday that he has already submitted his recommendation to President Duterte not to extend the military rule in Mindanao. The secretary said his decision not to extend martial law was based on the assessment of the military itself, as well as the inputs of the police in the area, since the security situation in Mindanao has already been stabilized.
2. Tisoy’s wrath: 17 dead, ₱667-M damage

Typhoon “Tisoy” (international name “Kammuri”) left a swath of destruction after barrelling into the country on Tuesday, with at least 17 people reported dead, 18 injured, and two others missing. In less than 24 hours, the Bicol region has incurred ₱667,331,940 damage to agriculture from Tisoy, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).

The Philippines and Japan are set to meet this week to discuss the progress of the Duterte administration’s big-ticket infrastructure projects that are being implemented with the Japanese government’s funding support. Finance Secretary Carlos G. Dominguez III and Economic and Planning Secretary Ernesto M. Pernia will be attending the Philippines-Japan Joint Committee on Infrastructure Development and Economic Cooperation, which is also the ninth such dialogue between the two countries.

The Philippines received the fifth-most “greenfield” foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Asia- Pacific, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) said in a report. Greenfield investment refers to new projects, as opposed to the expansion of existing projects.
