Background

The traditional quadrant-wise(or sextant-wise) approach of non-surgical periodontal treatment carries the recontamination risk of already-treated areas from untreated sites still harboring large amounts of periodontal pathogens. For this reason, a full mouth disinfection approach, consist of scaling and root planing of all pockets within 24 hours in combination with adjunctive chlorhexidine treatments, has been proposed. Also, several clinical studies in humans have repeatedly demonstrated benefits of adjunctive sys-temic antibiotics on the outcome of non-surgical periodontal therapy.

The purpose of this case report is to evaluate the benefit of a full mouth disinfection combined with adjunctive systemic antibiotics in aggressive periodontitis.

Material and methods

Three patients were suffered from aggressive periodontitis. Patients were treated by followings;

1. Scaling & tooth brushing instruction

2. Root planing on whole dentition within 24 hours and rinsing with antiseptic agent 3. Prescription systemic antibiotics

4. Re-evaluation

5. Supportive periodontal therapy

Results

Overall probing depth and bleeding on probing was reduced, and gingival health was improved.

Conclusion

Full mouth disinfection combined with systemic antibiotics is a beneficial treatment in aggressive periodontitis.
