50 My KDI School Experience Alumni Recollection

William Andrey Rodriguez

Costa Rica / Associate Administrative Officer

United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC/CEPAL)

When I look back in time, I realize how fortunate I was to pursue a master's degree at the KDI School of Public Policy and Management.

While I was able to enjoy the most amazing, eye-opening cultural experience of my life, the School offered me the possibility to explore and learn from many areas through a careful selection of courses, proficient faculty that encouraged student participation and an outstanding learning environment with excellent infrastructure, and fully supportive administrative staff.

The diverse environment fostered at the School made the experience even more enriching because it provided the opportunity to listen to varied perspectives from students of many nationalities and fields of work. Ultimately, KDI School has presented me with the necessary tools to face challenging situations at my work, which have been a significant element in my career progression. I am truly thankful to KDI School for all the positive impact it had on my life.

Zoltan Pozsar

Hungary / International Monetary Fund, Washington, D.C.

As I remember my time at the KDI School, I owe deep gratitude to the wonderful group of professors.

Their help was instrumental in landing a position as a macro analyst in the U.S. upon my graduation in 2002.

When I joined the Markets Group of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in 2008 to head up the analysis of securitization and wholesale funding markets for the Bank, I often thought how lucky I was to have learned about balance sheet dynamics in accounting, finance and macroeconomics at the KDI School.

Lessons I took from the professors’ approach about balance sheets were crucial to map and document the shadow banking system for the Bank.

With this background, I moved to the International Monetary Fund in 2011 as a visiting scholar analyzing the shadow banking system.

Ahmad Mukhtar

Pakistan / First Secretary, Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the WTO, Geneva, Switzerland

The most prominent impact the KDI School had on my professional life was made by an exposure to the international trade and WTO issues. The lessons I took from the KDI School went beyond the material in books. Professors’ individual interest in every student guided us throughout the semester. The real urge to embark upon my present career was actually triggered by their lectures and advice. At present I am an established professional in the field and I always try to keep in context what I learned at the KDI School: not just professional knowledge on the subject but more importantly how the KDI School en-2014_KDIschool_브브브(브브브브)_브브3브_20130703_브브브브 1 14. 7. 3. 브브 7:24 Page 48

Sayuri Bayona

Peru / Trade officer, Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism

While I was in Korea, learning was not limited to lectures and reading materials. I found that the genuine learning experience was also brought by different perspectives of my classmates.

The cultural diversity at the KDI School was without comparison. Friends from Thailand, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and particularly Korea formed an integral part of my every day interactions. Upon returning to Peru, I applied for an opening at MINCETUR, where they were looking to hire a specialist in bilateral affairs with Asia-Pacific countries. The Ministry was beginning Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations with China, had launched a Joint Feasibility Study for FTA between Peru and Korea, and had Japan on its mind for future trade negotiations.

The in-depth experience garnered at the KDI School regarding the Korean and Asian economies enabled me to attain the post I so much desired.

While I played only a small role in the negotiations with China in 2008, I was appointed as General Coordinator for the Peru-Korea FTA negotiations in 2009, working side-by-side with Peru’s Chief Negotiator.

My familiarity with the Korean economy helped me understand Korea’s position at the negotiating table, and allowed me to come up with suggestions compatible with both parties’ interests and concerns.

Daniel Jemberu

Ethiopia / National Economic Account Expert

Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MOFED)

The education I have received from KDI School for a master’s degree has certainly helped me to become a higher level expert in my profession. It surely enabled me to understand what it takes to achieve economic transformation and how to play my role in attaining economic goals and objectives for my country. Korea’s rapid economic achievement can be an excellent model for most developing countries including Ethiopia, and learning about it was a privilege. The knowledge and experience I acquired upon completion of the academic program helped me to have higher self-confidence, become more independent, and to enlarge my ideas and perspectives. This changed the way I think and the way I see the world.

Moreover, I got to actively participate in the development of bilateral relationship of the two countries through cooperation and experience sharing.

I currently work at MOFED that greatly contributes to the speedy, fair, and sustainable economic development through economic transformation.

Achieving this economic transformation requires highly educated and experienced individuals and is only possible when there is a clear vision and mission in each ministry, which will support the education and experience of each official.

Gulla Jan

Afghanistan / Independent Directorate of Local Governance

The KDI School experiences were exceptional. Upon completing my study at the KDI School of Public Policy and Management, I was able to find an excellent job within one month. This was because of the professional training provided by the KDI School.

Before I studied in Korea, I had worked with Ministry of Agriculture in a limited funded program, but currently I am working with the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) as governance officer where I am responsible for the oversight of the national program (Stability in Key Areas) funded by USAID.

The experiences of South Korea fit the Afghanistan environment well, as the South Korean situation was similar to Afghanistan.

I would like to offer special thanks to the KDI School faculty and staff who provided excellent support during my life at the School.
