applying "cooperative learning in a small group" for improving English reading skills of the middle school students.This study and experiment were conducted using 6 students in
reading.
The effect of cooperative learning in small group was examined in two areas : general English achievement and affective factors.
The following hypothesis were established on the bases of the effectiveness of the cooperative learning in a small group.
The first, according to the teaching method, there will be a difference in the change of affective factors such as the degrees of interest, participation, and reliability during their own experimental processes.
The second, according to the teaching method, there will be a difference in improvement of reading ability between two groups.
The results of the study are as follows :
1) At the beginning of this experiment, the two groups almost the same interest in English reading, at the end of this experiment, the experimental group showed a little more degree of interest, participation, and reliability during their own reading classes.
2) No significant differences were found in the reading comprehension tests between the experimental group and the control group.
3) To evaluate general English achievement, two groups did post reading task like writing topic sentence, the experimental group made the more complete and various topic sentences
than the control group.
The results above indicated that cooperative learning in a small group of English reading class turned out to be effective in improving English reading ability. so, it is suggested that cooperative learning in a small group is a more useful teaching approach worth applying in the middle school English classes.
In conclusion, cooperative learning in a small group as learner-centered method, could be more frequently applied to the education field. For doing that, further study about various English instruction models applying cooperative learning as learner-centered method in terms of English 4 skills is recommended, also the appropriate learning materials and evaluation basis must be prepared.
