C. 구동사의 분류
1) 분리타구동사
구동사를 동사와 첨사를 분리하는 일반적인 규칙이나 원리는 없지만 구동사의 분 리성과 비분리성에 관한 것은 보통 어휘적인 특징에 의지한다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 직접목적어가 대명사 일 경우에는 반드시 첨사를 동사와 분리해야한다. 분리되는 구 동사는 주로 대화, 소설, 뉴스 기사에서 주로 발생하고 get back, pick up, put on, look up, make up, take off, take on 등에서 분리되는 경우들이 많다. 분리구동사 는 첨사이동규칙(particle movement rule)에 의해 첨사가 명사구 즉 직접목적어 뒤
로 이동한다. 아래의 예 (76a)에서 동사 looked 뒤에 위치한 첨사 up은 (76b)처럼 직 접목적어 the address뒤로 이동하여 위치할 수 있다.
(76) a. Maggie looked up the address.
b. Maggie looked the address up.
대부분의 타구동사는 첨사이동 규칙을 취한다. 하지만 분리타구동사의 직접목적어 가 대명사가 아닌 일반명사일 경우에는 분리여부와 관계없이 문법적으로 틀리지 않지 만 직접 목적어가 인칭대명사 이거나 지시대명사 인 경우에는 첨사이동 규칙은 반드 시 일어난다. (77)과 (78)에서 직접목적어 the ball, the information을 대명사 it으로 바꾼다면 (77d)나 (78d) 와 같이 첨사 이동 규칙을 적용해서 첨사 away 와 up은 직 접목적어 뒤로 이동해야 한다. 직접목적어가 대명사 일 때 첨사 이동 규칙을 적용하 지 않는다면 비문이 된다.

(78) a. He looked up the information.
b. He looked the information up. c. *He looked up it.
d. He looked it up.
아래의 (79),(80)에서와 같이 몇 개 분리 가능한 구동사는 직접목적어가 반드시 동 사와 첨사 사이에 위치해야 하는 타구동사를 영구히 분리되는 타구동사
get down 과 let off의 첨사 down과 off가 명사구 Janice 와 the thief가 대명사로 바뀌거나 그렇지 않더라도 항상 명사구 뒤에 위치해야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 문법적으 로 비문이 된다.
(79) a. That job is getting Janice down. b. That job is getting her down. c. *That job is getting down Janice.
(80) a. The judge let the thief off with a light sentence.
b. The judge let him off with a light sentence.
c. *The judge let off the thief with a light sentence.
Ulm(1975)은 “직접목적어가 길고 음운론적으로 다음절이거나 문법적으로 복잡하다 면, 첨사는 동사 뒤에 위치해야 한다.”라고 했다. 첨사 이동 규칙의 원칙이 예외적으 로 일어나는 경우도 있지만 아래(81)과 같이 목적어가 길다 면 적용하지 않는다. 첨사 이동 규칙을 적용하지 않는 이유는 아래 (82)와 같은 문장을 만들지 않기 위해서이다.
문법적으로는 옳은 문장이지만 첨사가 동사와 멀어지면서 복잡해졌다. 이런 문장은 문미 중점10)의 원리로 설명할 수 있다. Arnold et. al.(2000)은 “길고 복잡한 명사구 (NPs)가 이 원리를 따르지 않으면 문장을 이해하는 과정을 더 어렵게 한다.”라고 주 장한다.
(81) John looked up some information about an early religion in which forces of nature such as fire were worshipped.
(82) John looked some information about an early religion in which forces of nature such as fire were worshipped up.

2) 비분리타구동사
타구동사 들 중 일부는 직접목적어가 대명사 일지라도 첨사가 직접목적어 뒤로 이 동하는 것을 허락하지 않는다. 즉 첨사이동 규칙이 적용되지 않는 구동사를 비분리타 구동사라고 한다. 아래의 예문 (83), (84)에서와 같이 구동사 come across, run into는 목적어가 대명사 여부와 관계없이 동사와 첨사가 분리되면 비문이 된다.
(83) a. I came across an interesting article.
b. I came across it last night.
c. *I came an interesting article across. d. *I came it across.
(84) a. John ran into an old friend.
b. John ran into him.
c. * John ran an old friend into. d. * John ran him into.
아래의 표는 우리들이 잘 쓰는 구동사를 자구동사, 타구동사로 구분하고 타구동사는 분리타구동사와 비분리타구동사로 구분해 놓은 것이다.
