Today, salt can easily and cheaply be bought in any store. But it hasn’t always been this easy to get. This tiny white rock has played a very important role in history. Around the world, cities were born, roads were made, and wars were fought for this reason: humans cannot live without salt.

China

The ancient emperors of China understood the value of salt.

They controlled all the salt in China as a strategy to make money.

The first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, needed a lot of money to build the Great Wall. So he raised the price of salt and made people buy it from the government. He made lots of money and was able to build the Great Wall. For this reason, it may be said that salt built the Great Wall of China.

America

Salt also played a role in American history. In the Civil War (1861-1865), both the North and the South needed salt. Without it, food for their soldiers couldn’t be preserved. Four days after the war started, President Lincoln stopped all ships carrying salt from going to the South. Soon, salt became hard to find in the South.

But in the Southern state of Virginia, some salt was still produced.

Then, in December of 1864, the Union Army of the North attacked Virginia. They stopped the production of salt there. Without salt, it was impossible for the South to keep fighting. Less than a year later, the war was over. The North’s victory was made possible by their control of salt.

India

In India, salt helped Mahatma Gandhi win independence from the British. In the 1920s, it was easy for Indians to get salt. They made it from the sea. However, the British government made it illegal for Indians to make salt by law. Instead, they had to buy it from Britain. British salt was expensive, and this made it difficult for poor people to get enough. So Gandhi decided to fight the British law.
