Social responsibility as the thrust of CSR guides businesses to ethical decisions that
insulate the businesses and their operations from government agencies‟ direct regulations-Kaliski (2001)
What is the Implication for Businesses?
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) represents the idea that business has a duty to serve the society, as well as the financial interest of
stockholders (Aneke: 2014).
What is the Implication for Businesses?
Companies therefore adopt socially responsible behaviour for the following reasons:
• To protect the company‟s right to exist which is dependent on its responsiveness to its external environment.
• To avoid scrutiny and sanctions from Federal, state, and local governments who can threaten increased
regulation if a business does not evolve to meet changing social standards.
• To enhance a firm‟s long-term viability. There is an
implicit belief that “long-run profit maximisation is
inexorably linked to CSR.” (Aneke: 2014).

Current Trends in CSR in Nigeria
• The past decade (2004 – 2014) has seen a steady evolution of the practice of CSR from corporate
philanthropy to a more structured model of intervention.
• Though Nigeria‟s private sector is still lagging
behind in the understanding and practice of standard CSR, there has been an increased interest and
Nigerian corporate establishments have begun to take
CSR seriously.

Following what was termed a „Tsunami‟ in the Nigerian Financial sector in 2009, In July 2012 the Bankers Committee approved the adoption of these
principles created by the Central Bank of Nigeria
It mandates all Banks to provide quarterly feedback reports on implementation
progress and issue its first sustainable banking report by 31 December 2014 at the latest
The model consists of 9 key principles impacting Bank‟s business operations and activities and a 5 year implementation plan is required
These principles represent the minimum requirements for the journey
towards becoming a more sustainable bank
