There are also drones in the hive. They are all male, and they have huge eyes. Their job is to mate with the queen bee. They don’t even collect food! When there isn’t enough food in winter, they are sometimes kicked out.
The queen, workers, and drones all do their best in a hive. In this way, their hive can grow and stay strong.

Honeycomb Cells
What about a triangular or square shape? Both of these fit together without gaps. But more wax is needed to make them. A hexagonal shape uses less wax.
Hexagonal shapes can sit safely and tightly against each other. This makes the honeycomb structure very strong. So it rarely breaks.
Smart honeybees know that the hexagonal shape is perfect for them. It makes good use of space and material. It also strengthens the honeycomb so that honey can be safely stored.
Words 172
Imagine a honeycomb. It has hundreds of small cells. What shape is each cell? Is it a circle, square, hexagon, or octagon? A honeycomb cell has six sides, so it is a hexagon. Honeybees lay eggs inside these hexagonal cells and store their honey in them. But why are all honeycomb cells shaped the same?
First, a hexagonal shape saves more space than other shapes. What if bees built their honeycomb cells with circular shapes? There would be gaps between the circles. A hexagonal shape doesn’t leave gaps and therefore saves space.
Why do bees build hexagonal honeycomb cells instead of another shape?
Imagine you will build your own house. What shape would you build it?

The Disappearance of Bees
Bees Social Studies
Yes, animals like the giant panda and the meerkat are disappearing.
Albert Einstein once said that if bees ever disappeared, humans would be in trouble.
Many scientists today agree. Bees have been
disappearing since 2006. At this rate, bees may be gone entirely in the near future.
Bees are more important to us than you might think. Bees pollinate plants. Without bees, plants could not grow fruit. If bees died out, crops like apples, cucumbers, and grapefruits could die, too!
Why are bees dying more quickly than before?
Some scientists believe that mobile phones are a problem for bees. They think the signals from phones confuse bees. This makes it harder for them to find their way back to their hive. The poisons used on crops are another problem. The poisons are supposed to kill bugs that eat the crops, but they kill bees, too!
Governments and scientists are working together to stop bees from disappearing. What can we do to help? One thing we can do is to use less poison when we grow plants. This will make it easier for bees to stay healthy and strong!

Animals Adapting to City Life
08Cities are full of tall buildings, factories, and cars. They are very useful places for people to live. However, for animals, living in a city can be tough. This is why some animals have changed to survive city life.
The peppered moth, for example, changes its color to survive in the city. There is a lot of air pollution in the city. This makes the surface of trees darker. The peppered moth changes to a darker color to match the trees. In this way, it can hide from other animals.
The great tit changes its voice to survive in the city. It sings to find a mate. But in the city, it is too noisy for other birds to hear it singing. So the great tit changes its song to a higher pitch.
In the forest, the crow drops seeds and nuts from high above to crack them on the ground.
Then it can get the food inside. However, the city crow has a better method. It drops its seeds on the street and waits for cars to crush them. Then it swoops down and grabs its meal.
