Chapter 3. Small Amplitude Wave Theory 3.1. Characteristics of Water Waves
3.1.1. wave form
Refer to the attached paper.
3.1.2. definition
a. wavelength: a distance between two adjacent crests or troughs, L (or λ ) b. wave period: a time between two adjacent crests or troughs, T
c. wave amplitude: a maximum displacement of wave from the still water level, a d. wave height: H= 2a
e. wave steepness: s=H/L
3-2
f. wavenumber: k= 2π/L (describes the spatial repeatability of waves) g. angular frequency: ω = 2π/Trad/sec (cf. frequency :f= 1/THz)
<Definition of terms - elementary, sinusoidal, progressive wave>
3.1.3. Types of Waves
a. examples of waves in engineering: sound, ripples on a pond, string b. examples of water waves
