GCF families in Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Venue

GCF Staff and their families took a trip to Pyeongchang, where the 2018 Winter Olympic Games will take place, from February 25 to 28 and March 3 to 5. Through the two rounds of trip, GCF families visited the Olympic venue and major facilities, and experienced winter sports. The tour to the Ski Jumping Tower and lessons for ski and ski- board in Alpensia Resort gave them a wintry chance to get a glimpse of the Olympics next year and get the taste of snow sports. Executive Director Howard Bamsey of the Fund and Director General Sang-bum Lee of the Environment and Greenery Bureau of Incheon, joining the second trip in the first week of March, had a talk about collaboration between Incheon and the Fund, while spending time getting to know their staff and their families. GCF family trips like this are expected to provide opportunities to explore Korea and get the Fund and its host city to become closer.

Employment Guide and Consulting Workshop for GCF Families

As the Green Climate Fund is expanding its organization, more than 100 GCF staff are now working in Songdo. Most of them are living away from their home country, and some staying alone away from their family. Difficult to find a job in Korea, spouses may be reluctant to move to Songdo.

Sometimes the challenge of spousal employment is pointed out as one of the reasons for which the Fund loses its staff.

In order to help ease this challenge, Incheon Metropolitan City organized a two-day employment guide and consulting workshop for GCF spouses. On the first day, an official from the Incheon Immigration Office and employment experts from a leading head-hunting firm are invited to give participants useful information and advice, including mainly how to get work permissions, the Korean labor market situation, how to develop your network and career in Korea. Through a one-on-one session on the second day, spouses could get more detailed advice such as CV clinics and tailored career development recommendations.

An official from the city say, “The challenge of spousal employment and career development is felt not only by the Fund but by other international organizations and the entire expat community in Songdo. We hope that this initiative can contribute to improving Songdo’s settlement environment for expatriates.”

Open Lecture And Community (OLAC) Talk

In order to establish a networking and knowledge-sharing

community in Songdo, a new initiative is launched. The first Open Lecture And Community (OLAC) Talk was held on March 24 on the 23 floor of G-Tower.

The event was open to all the entire expat community, including international organizations,

Chadwick International School and the Incheon Global Campus, as well as interested Incheon citizens.

The OLAC Talk consisted of two lectures with professors from Underwood International College of Yonsei University talking about Korean ancient history and

Incheon city during the modernization era.

An official from the city said, “This lecture helps foreigners better understand Korean culture and history, thereby feeling more at home in Songdo. I hope that this initiative can contribute to a culturally diverse and rich community with free communication and exchange among locals and expats.”

Plan to build a 40-MW fuel cell power plant in Songdo

Incheon Metropolitan City pushes forward the construction of a fuel cell power plant at the Songdo Sewage Treatment facility.

Fuel cells are technologies and devices that convert the chemical energy produced by the oxidation of fuels such as hydrogen or methanol into electric energy. They generate electricity by using energy produced in the process of chemically reacting hydrogen with oxygen in the air.

It is similar to a battery in that it generates electricity through chemical reaction, but the fuel cell receives the reactants from the outside, so unlike a battery, it does not require charging.

In addition, since it does not burn fossil fuels, there is no emission of toxic pollutants such as sulfur and nitrogen oxides, and carbon dioxide emissions can be drastically reduced.

Park Chan-ho, professor of Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), said,

"Although the fuel cell power generation facility is expected to expand as a future energy source, we must pay attention to efficiency and safety."
